US and Venezuela
The US has placed an economic embargo against the government of Venezuela. The only other countries currently under such strict US measures are North Korea, Iran, Syria and Cuba.
Venezuela is currently in a state of crisis. Four million Venezuelans have left the country in recent years as political discontent has contributed to hyperinflation, power cuts, and shortages of food and medicine.
The main point of contention is the disputed rule between President Nicolás Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaidó – who Maduro accused of trying to topple his regime. More than 50 countries, including the US, recognize Guaidó as president.
So what comes next? Sanctions placed against Venezuela appear to be the latest form of a pressure policy to oust Maduro.
