The Race for the White House
Let’s take a dive into the upcoming 2020 presidential election.
What do the polls say? According to the most recent RealClearPolitics data, roughly 49.3% of registered U.S. voters support Joe Biden (D), compared to 40.3% for President Trump (R).
In the battleground states: FL PA WI NC AZ Biden:48.0 48.5 48.5 47.5 47.2 Trump:42.8 42.0 42.0 44.2 44.4
Yes, but… Since 1900, just five incumbent presidents have lost the subsequent election. And votes won’t be cast for another four months.
Prior to the 1992 election, polls gave George W. Bush a 21% lead over Bill Clinton. Ultimately, Clinton overtook the incumbent with 43.0% of the popular vote compared to Bush’s 37.4%.
In 1948, October polls showed Harry Truman’s opponent, Thomas E. Dewey, leading the incumbent by 5%. Truman ended up winning a second term as president with a ~4.5% margin in the popular vote.
While national polls for the 2016 election were reasonably accurate, state polls underestimated Trump’s support in the Upper Midwest (where he won PA, WI, & MI). According to a retrospective study, roughly 13% percent of voters in WI, FL, & PA decided on a presidential candidate in the final week of the campaign.
What’s next? Both parties’ national conventions will take place next month. The DNC is scheduled for August 17-20th in WI, while the RNC will be held August 24-27th in FL.
The first presidential debate is scheduled for Sept. 29th. The Oct. 15th presidential debate is up in the air, as the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor canceled plans to host amidst the pandemic. The final debate will take place on Oct. 22nd.
So… what are people saying?

Out Of The Hot Seat
According to the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration, an average of 38 children in the U.S. die each year due to being forgotten in a hot car. When Lydia Denton of North Carolina learned about this tragic statistic, the compassionate 12-year-old was determined to invent a solution.
