When the journey becomes the destination

Images: Oliver Gamblin

Lavi Scholl and Ollie Gamblin, pictured above, met in Australia in 2017 when they were both solo-traveling and working on a farm.

The sparks were instant, and the couple began traveling together soon after, living out of Ollie's camper van for a while before deciding they wanted to travel the world as much as they could.

A motorhome wasn't conducive to international traveling, so, after some brainstorming, they decided their best bet was via motorbike.

That was nearly 600 days ago. And 39 different countries and one Vegas wedding later, the husband and wife just earned the world record for youngest duo to circumnavigate the globe on a motorbike.

  • “It was quite an endeavor to set out and say, ‘Right, we’re going to do this,’” Gamblin, from the UK, told CNN Travel. “We didn’t really know how long it was going to take. We didn’t know whether we’d get to the end!”

The leap: The pair got in touch with Guinness World Records before their trip to see if they could possibly break the record. Neither of them had ever traveled long distances on a motorcycle.

  • Ollie and Lavi had to meet certain requirements set by the World Record books, which included beginning and starting their trip at the same location, traveling in one direction continuously, and traveling through two antipodal points.
  • Over the next year and a half, Ollie and Lavi traversed the globe, traveling ~47,000 miles through the rough terrain of Morrocco, humid rainforests in South America, and high elevation in the Andes Mountains.
  • The riders, along with many of their family and friends, threw the couple a huge welcome home party on November 19th of last year.

👀 Looking ahead... The couple are already planning their next trip, and hope to inspire others to take the leap and adventure while they can. “A lot of people find a lot of reasons not to do something,” said Ollie. “And they think they have to be ultimately prepared in every single way… We didn’t have everything worked out on the way, but we did manage to work it out as we went along.❤️"
