💉 So, You’ve Been Vaccinated… Now What?
The U.S. has administered 167M COVID-19 vaccine doses to date, averaging more than 3M per day over the past week according to Bloomberg.
💬 CDC Says…
Last month, the CDC updated its guidelines for fully vaccinated individuals – defined as two weeks after receiving the final dose – who can now:
Visit with other fully vaccinated people indoors sans masks or distancing.
Visit with unvaccinated people from a single, low-risk household sans masks or distancing.
Refrain from quarantine and testing after a known exposure if asymptomatic.
The agency published a brief amendment on Friday:
Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I Still Catch/Spread the Virus?
Yes. Two of the three vaccines authorized for emergency use in the U.S. offer 100% protection against hospitalization and death in clinical trials, but not against infection (Moderna’s vaccine offers 89% protection against hospitalization).
Trials have shown strong protection from symptomatic COVID-19 cases (72%-91%) and provided evidence for protection against asymptomatic cases (though further study is needed to draw conclusions).
What About Masks?
The CDC guidelines say fully vaccinated individuals should still take precautions like masks and social distancing when out in public or when visiting unvaccinated households with a member at increased risk for severe COVID-19.
How Long Does Protection Last?
Short Answer: We don’t know.
Long answer: Researchers are continuing to monitor participants in the original clinical trials in an attempt to answer this question. Last week, Pfizer published an update showing its vaccine was 91% effective at preventing symptomatic cases for at least six months. More information will become available as time passes.
When Can Children Receive the Vaccine?
Unknown. Pfizer’s vaccine is currently authorized for use in people 16 and older, compared to 18 and older for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson.
Last week, Pfizer published results from a trial of volunteers aged 12 through 15 in which their vaccine demonstrated 100% efficacy and robust antibody responses. The company is expected to request FDA approval for adolescents this month.
Harvey Weinstein filed an appeal seeking a new trial on Monday after the former Hollywood producer was found guilty of two felony sex crimes in February and sentenced to 23 years in prison.
In the 166-page appeal, Weinstein’s lawyers raise seven examples of “errors” that, in their view, compromised the fairness of the trial.
More: Weinstein is facing further criminal charges for rape and sexual assault in Los Angeles. Officials are in the process of extraditing him to LA after a pandemic-induced delay. He is currently being held in a maximum-security prison in New York state.
🖊️ Putin Signs Amendment
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a piece of legislation yesterday allowing him to run for two more six-year terms once his current tenure ends in 2024.
The move cements constitutional changes approved by voters in a national referendum last July (which included some 200 other amendments, including popular social welfare programs).
It establishes a two-term limit for future presidents while simultaneously resetting Putin’s term count, meaning the 68-year-old can now potentially remain Russia’s leader until the age of 83.
