Northwestern doctors used a spinal anesthesia shot to ensure the patient felt no pain during the procedure, which marked one of the first times an organ transplant has been performed on an awake patient. Additionally, the patient required “zero opioid narcotic pain medication” following their procedure – unlike normal kidney transplants, where patients are typically prescribed opioids to manage post-surgery pain.
