🧠🧬 Stat of the Day: After more than a decade of research, the first-ever full reconstruction of the brain of an adult animal with eyes and legs – a female fruit fly – is finally here. In a study published Wednesday in Nature, hundreds of scientists described how they mapped out all ~140,000 neurons, which were joined together by 490+ feet of wiring (remember: this is a fruit fly). Previously, the only adult animal to have its brain entirely reconstructed was a tiny species of worm with 385 neurons in its entire nervous system. And even though scientists have come a long way since then, mapping the human brain and its ~86 billion neurons is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
