Should American women aged 18-25 be required to register for the US military draft?

👍 Yes (39%) – "Personally I think it’s part of being a citizen of a country. Many countries require mandatory military service for young adults. There should of course be conditions which would excuse people such as having children."

  • "In Israel the draft is mandatory for everyone, and it creates a very bonded society. Women can be valuable to the army in intelligence or other jobs that don’t include combat. And if there is a mandatory draft, women that are unable to fight can also help by volunteering in other places the country needs, such as hospitals, schools, or government agencies."

"The wars of the future will not consist of soldiers hiding in trenches and charging into battle. It will be a complex, highly technical, force that will require more than hand to hand combat skills. God forbid we need to but all of us need to be prepared to participate in whatever nightmare another war will bring."

  • "Though it would be a more complicated process, since you would not want both parents of a family to be drafted. I do think it would provide equal rights for all US citizens and as pointed out, drafted does not necessarily mean active combat. Further, if people actually start getting drafted, that will mean that we are involved in an all-out war, and that would affect and involve everyone in the US anyway."

♂️ No, it should remain only men (19%) – "I hear so many different reasons for why women should or shouldn’t but it’s like we’ve all forgotten the real reason why women were excluded in the first place. The number of living women in your society is also your capacity to replace your population, which is normally lowered during large scale wars that require a draft. It doesn’t really matter how many men you have, but you can only make one child per woman every year. Seems like a straight forward decision, but nothing is settled with logical thought anymore."

  • "I don’t see a reason to put more lives at risk in the case of a draft. Although women would be incredibly valuable in combat and non-combat roles, the reason men have been used for warfare throughout history is because of their general fitness and strength when compared to women. Fit women with combat or non-combat skills could, of course, enlist during draft time, but I don’t think it’s right to force them to given the large quantity of availiable men should a draft be necessary."

🚫 No, nobody should have to register (32%) – "I served in the navy from 2004-2010 voluntarily. Our armed forces aren't lacking in volunteers, and I believe it should remain that way regardless if it's men or women. The American show of force is world-wide, and the blowback from the last draft is still affecting current generations. The draft needs to stop."

  • "I don’t think it should be legal to force anyone to throw their life away in combat. If they choose to serve their country in the military then that’s admirable, but mandatory conscription blatantly tramples on people’s rights to life and freedom and should absolutely not be allowed."

"While there are both men and women who love serving and have long careers in the military, there’s also a huge issue with sexual harassment and assault, especially against women and LGBTQ+ individuals. No one should be forced to sign up for that possibility. The culture needs to change, and I don’t see that happening soon."

🤷 Unsure/other (10%) – "Whether it's just men or women are added, the most important thing is to get rid of excemptions. Those inevitably favor the wealthy. If lawmakers knew they were sending their own children/grandchildren into war, they would be more cautious about using power this way."
