In general, do you prefer tighter or looser US export controls when it comes to artificial intelligence chips?

Tighter (47%) – "Normally, I'm all for free trade and globalism. In this case, though, in the broader context of China accelerating its military development from the 19th People's Congress and then accelerating MORE since the 20th, we need to maintain our existing advantages as long as possible and develop more as soon as possible. President Xi only has so much longer to solve the Taiwan Problem if he wants to solve it during his lifetime; dorect military conflict is absolutely on the table as an option within the next decade. I'd like the West to win."

  • "I am 100% into technology advancement (my industry, so I'm biased), but I have seen over and over again our technology being stolen and used for advancement of competing technology. Now, if by not having a tech, another country's research comes up with something better, that is fantastic (even if we don't have access to it - which makes us think harder). Now, sharing tech is also good and raises everyone. The problem is people fight and I'd rather be on the side of the strong than the weak."

"You may as well figure that anything you sell to China has the technology sold along with it as they reverse engineer, violate patent law, lie and find ways to steal or force disclosure of tech from companies they do business with. Giving them nothing, unless they change their ways which is unlikely with Communists, is the only way to even minimally help this transfer of tech from happening. Selling to them only accelerates it."

Looser (21%) – "We are in the middle of what could be life changing wealth for those invested in American tech companies. Restrictions that could propel other countries into beefing up their production of such tools will only serve to decrease the money earned by American companies (and Americans). Let trade be free."

Unsure/other (32) – "AI is becoming ruinous for us as a society and this arms race is utterly ridiculous. The energy used, environmental impact, and the impact of becoming reliant on dodgy LLMs built upon stolen content is going to haunt us for decades."

  • "I don't have enough research to have an actual opinion about ai. I see it as a good thing in some ways, but also see it as humans possibly being in a terminator movie in real time."
