What are your personal feelings regarding the House v. NCAA settlement?

Approve (21%) – "At a time when students are just starting life on their own they are often expected to practice and lift long hours and historically have only been paid by a scholarship but even the number of scholarships was limited. I 100% agree that student athletes should be paid and are employees of the school."

  • "I’m from Kentucky, nobody loves basketball more than this state. And like our famous thoroughbreds, our UK basketball players are finely trained, and breakable assets. These players have worked hard their whole lives to get to this place. They have to play hard and rough. If they get broken too badly and can’t be fixed, their opportunities for employment are gone. College basketball is as much entertainment as it is sports. I’m in favor of letting these college athletes make as much money as they can, while they can. Every time they step on the court, we all know it could be their last time. The athletes should be compensated for taking this risk, playing hard and entertaining fans."

Disapprove (51%) – "I am 100% in favor of athletes receiving compensation but I think this settlement does a poor job of establishing a system that will be effective and resistant to corruption. Additionally, a rarely reported feature of the settlement is a reduction in roster size for many sports - making this even more a deal for football and basketball only, which has always been a part of the problem."

  • "College athletics - instead of academics - has always felt like the VIP at major universities. The piece most upsetting to me is that athletes can receive payments on top of all the financial support they already receive. What about all the students going to university to receive a robust education? I love sports - I was a full-time athlete myself - but the cost of college in this country is astronomical and the support for the majority of people who attend seems to be significantly lacking. Why not use these new funds to pay for athletes’ scholarships and reallocate those funds to support the greater student body? Seems like a system that favors one segment of the student body."

"While it sounds good in theory, there are too many loopholes for any sort of level playing field. This plan would only work if there were complete transparency of all financial from every athletic department, which we know won't happen since they are set up as private/independent entities adjacent to schools, and never have been openly transparent about money. The NCAA is far from perfect, however their rules at least kept sports somewhat equal."

  • "Schools need to return to their core work of education and stop the push to become sports and media giants. Only a small fraction of college spending should be on sports and other auxiliary student programs to be accredited as a school rather than a specialty sports/media business through Congressional legislation."

"These new policies have drastically changed college sports, shifting the focus from playing for the love of the game to financial gain. The shift raises concerns about team dynamics, recruitment, and the spirit of collegiate competition, potentially creating a two-tiered system and altering the competitive landscape. While NIL deals offer opportunities for athletes to profit, they also threaten the essence of teamwork and unity that defines college sports."

Unsure/other (28%) – "From a financial/business perspective, there's a lot of things that need to make sure the financial incentive side of things is handled correctly. But in addition to that, it's a LOT of pressure to throw on young college students. I think that they're humans and adults and they deserve to be paid for NIL, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't come with an extra level of caution knowing just how young they are and how much of a spotlight is on them. Too many people get ruined by the celebrity status already, so I hope this will help more than hurt."

  • "It is unclear to me how this will all shake out in the end. The days of schools making millions while some of their athletes went hungry was dead wrong, so I support revenue sharing. At the same time, I am concerned as to whether this particular ruling will result in fairness to all athletes, which is what they deserve. It is their hard work and risk to lifetime physical and mental health which requires systematic protection and reward. More will need to be done."

"I can see how there are some athletes that deserve to be paid, but kids in college are really young to start a celebrity lifestyle. Most of them have no idea how to handle that and it will wreck a lot of their lives. Also, I have seen universities steal money from smaller athletic clubs for the bigger and popular ones. What's to keep a university from adding a fee to recover those funds? It sounds like two steps forward and one step back to me."
