The DOJ has been seeking to put a citizenship question on the 2020 census, citing the data as critical to the department's enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. Those against it argue it would make residents less likely to return census forms, which would harm the count and impact the apportionment of Congress (the process through which House seats are assigned to states based on population).

Last week, the Supreme Court ruled against the DOJ, stating that the current justification for adding the question was insufficient, though didn't explicitly say it could not be asked.

Earlier this week, DOJ officials announced they would not be pursuing adding the citizenship question to the census and had begun to print it without the question, only to reverse the announcement the next day to say they will continue to pursue legal avenues to place the question on the 2020 census.

Justin Amash, a House representative from Michigan, announced he is leaving the Republican party yesterday. He was the only Republican that supported impeachment of President Trump, and cites disenchantment with party politics as a driver for his decision.
