Nike & the "Betsy Ross flag"

Last week, Nike pulled one of their USA themed sneakers out of production due to it featuring "an old version of the American flag." The sneaker contained an early US flag design with 13 stars arranged in a circle, commonly referred to as the "Betsy Ross flag", which elicited pushback from Colin Kaepernick and many others, who say this particular flag is an offensive symbol previously and currently used by extremist groups associated with white supremacy.

Where's the controversy in that?
Many people, including historians, are unaware of such an association, and view the "Betsy Ross flag" as a patriotic symbol that honors the country's foundation. Let's see what people are saying...

When a fire broke out while he was hanging out with his sister and her three kids, 20-year-old Derrick Byrd leapt into action, running downstairs from the second floor to get into a position to catch his nephews and niece to ensure they made it safely out of the fire. He was burnt after running downstairs, but still managed to catch his baby nephew, along with his other 6-year-old nephew, Junior. His 8-year-old niece was too scared to jump and ended up falling back into the burning room, screaming his name. Derrick ran into the fire, suffering 2nd and 3rd degree burns, and carried her out of the house, saving her life.

There's a real-life Batman dedicated to saving shelter pets - the Dark Knight's name? Bruce Way- kidding, it's Chris Van Dorn, founder of the animal rescue nonprofit Batman4Paws, who helps transport animals from overcrowded shelters to forever homes. The costume was intended so he could stay anonymous and keep the focus on the mission of saving animals, as well as open up a dialogue about the importance of adoption and fostering, but he was outed when GoFundMe honored his work, naming him one of their GoFundMe Heroes.

In something directly out of 'Black Mirror', researchers from the University of Washington have created BrainNet, a brain-to-brain interface in which three people collaborate to beat a Tetris-style game using only their minds. The game allows users to interact with each other only via brain activity, and was successfully beaten 81% of the time. This paves the way for further research around brain-to-brain interfaces and collaboration of brainpower to solve problems, but the team of researchers also hope to open a dialogue around the ethics of brain augmentation research and the invasion of privacy that could come with it, even though the technology is in its 'Kitty Hawk' days.
