2020 Election

The first 2020 Democratic debate took place a couple weeks ago and naturally the polls have shifted since then - let's take a look.

Polls
A Washington Post/ABC News poll and an Economist/YouGov poll from last week show former VP Joe Biden still leading the pack among registered voters (WP/ABC - 30% E/YG - 23%). Sen. Bernie Sanders (19%, 9%), Kamala Harris (13%, 15%), Elizabeth Warren (12%, 19%) and Pete Buttigieg (4%, 8%) trail behind.

So, what's next?
The second Democratic debate will take place July 30-31 in Detroit. Let's see what people are saying...

Tens of thousands of people continue to gather in Hong Kong in protest (and some clashing with police) of a proposed extradition bill. Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has suspended the extradition bill indefinitely, but it has not yet been withdrawn.

Attorney General William Barr said yesterday he believes there is a legal path to include the citizenship question on the 2020 US census. This comes after the DOJ announced last week it will be dropping the effort to include the question, only to reverse the decision the following day.

Elizabeth Warren's campaign announced they raised $19.1 million during the second quarter, coming in third amongst all Democratic presidential hopefuls. South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (~$25 million) and former VP Joe Biden ($21.5 million) led the pack.

Tim Crowley and his friends were enjoying a few fine pilsners in Northern Utah when an injured bird fell out of the sky and landed on the ground in the middle of the group. Crowley called the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah (WRCNU), and was told to bring the bird in for treatment due to the severity of the injuries - the only problem was the whole group was too intoxicated to drive. Determined to get the bird much needed medical care, Crowley and friends called the bird an Uber, which, to the astonishment of WRCNU workers, showed up at the shelter with just "Petey Uber" (the name bestowed to the bird by the group) in the backseat.

Grand Rapids First, a church in Wyoming, Michigan, paid off nearly 2,000 families' medical debt last week. The church partnered with RIP Medical Debt, a nonprofit that purchases medical debt to help alleviate the burden on debtors, to wipe the slate clean on ~$1.8 million worth of unpaid medical expenses for the families.

When Isaac Diaz was 11 years old, he had an asthma attack and began to feel his muscles getting weaker and weaker out of nowhere, eventually ending in his paralysis - doctors are still unsure of the cause, but suspect an autoimmune response that affected the motor part of his neurons. Isaac, who was determined to not let the situation affect his life, has been recognized as a Presidential Scholar by the Department of Education, voted Prom King and received a full scholarship to Johns Hopkins University to study chemical engineering.

More than 325,000 people in the UK have signed a petition calling for McDonald’s and Burger King to replace their plastic kids’ meal toys with more environmentally friendly options. Last year, McDonald’s surveyed mothers in Japan and found many wanted to recycle the toys but didn’t know how - the company ended up collecting more than 1.2 million used toys to recycle over a 10 week period.

Engineers at the University of Cambridge have created the "Vegebot", a robot that uses machine learning to harvest lettuce. The prototype has been tested in fields, representing the latest use of smart technology in agriculture.

Waymo, the Alphabet owned self driving tech company, is rolling out free wifi in its driverless taxis. The company is currently undergoing a pilot for its taxis in Phoenix, where it's signed up 1,000 people to utilize the service.

Amazon warehouse workers in Minnesota are planning a strike on Prime Day to demand safer working conditions and secure jobs. Prime Day is one of Amazon’s busiest shopping days of the year, though the planned strike is not expected to harm its operations.

Alaska is the most Northern, Eastern and Western state in the US. It's obviously the most Northern state, but takes home the Eastern and Western crowns due to the Aleutian Islands, which extend to the edge of the Western Hemisphere and into the Eastern Hemisphere across the 180th Meridian.
