Shelter savior

How many dogs are too many? If you ask Steve Grieg, he’d probably say there’s no such thing. After his beloved dog died, he grieved for two months. After that, he asked a local shelter if they had any dogs that no one wanted - the shelter introduced him to a 12-year-old Chihuahua named Eeyore. Following his adoption of Eeyore, Greig kept adopting unwanted dogs - he adopted eight older dogs with health issues and special diets, as well as two family members’ dogs. Now, he’s got 10 dogs, and even adopted a pig named Bikini, a rabbit, and a chicken. The animals nobody wanted now have a home.

Trash to treasure

You won’t be calling this place a dump. One startup’s vision of converting landfills into energy is coming true. The startup, Sierra Energy, has created a new blast furnace that converts trash into clean energy. The furnace heats up to 4,000 degrees - 2x as hot as the heart of a volcano - and burns landfill trash into fuel that’s 20 times cleaner than California fuel standards. Sierra Energy has raised $33 million to further develop their furnace...now, that’s a hot take.

Need a lift?

Would you help someone fix a flat on the side of the road? How about flip an SUV? When an SUV crashed into a tree in a California city, more than a dozen strangers rushed over to help the driver, pushing the vehicle so that it wouldn’t overturn. Despite the smoke coming from the crashed vehicle, they held the SUV so that the driver could help someone still trapped in the passenger seat, extracting them from the wreckage and saving their life. Now that’s road-side assistance.

Dose of Knowledge Answer

Cats really do always land on their feet - thanks to physics.

Due to a “righting reflex” and a flexible spine (plus a little help from the conservation of angular momentum) cats are able to orient themselves during a fall to land on their feet. Just don’t test it out on your cat please?
