Power moves only

Good morning. Hope you had a great weekend. One Colorado family sure didn’t - a bear entered their home through the front door, and exited "like the Kool-Aid man"... oh yeah.

ICE and Immigration

This past June, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation was expected to be launched targeting 2,000 families facing deportation orders across 10 US cities. This operation was delayed as President Trump and top Democratic leaders sought compromise on immigration issues.

In mid-July, similar ICE operations were expected to take place. The large-scale operation did not materialize as expected, but reports indicated ICE activity on a smaller scale (35 arrests).

Last Wednesday, ICE agents entered seven factories in Mississippi, detaining 680 people suspected to be unauthorized workers. Court documents that secured the search warrants indicated six of the seven plants were employing people who lacked authorization to work in the US. By Thursday, about 300 detainees had been released.

Shoe’s on the other foot

How far would your team go to keep an even playing field? During the U19 Women’s Lacrosse World Championship tournament in Ontario, Israel faced-off against Kenya in a game that saw Israel winning 13-4. But Kenya had one noticeable disadvantage: they had no cleats. The Israeli women took notice, and delivered brand new cleats to their Kenyan rivals the next day - all made to size. The day after the Kenyan team received the shoes, they captured their second tournament game win, defeating Belgium 16-9. Sportsmanship at its finest.

The Green House

At age 20, Amonte Green found himself without a job or parents. His mom had passed away while he was in high school, and when his nearby family members couldn’t take him in, Green moved to a group home and was forced to drop out of school and work full time. After a verbal altercation with another member of the group home turned physical, Green was sent to jail for 33 days. Helpless and with no one else to call, he turned to the only person he could think of - his 8th grade math teacher, Kate Demory. Demory had tutored him prior to his mother’s passing and the two had remained in touch (Green texted her every Mother’s Day). Following his release from jail, Demory and her husband took him in and started a GoFundMe campaign to help get him back on his feet. Thanks to their help, Green now has a job and a place to stay, but he’s determined to give back. He’s using what’s left over from his GoFundMe campaign to build a non-profit, The Green House, where people in positions like he once was can receive education, mentorship and community.

Homeless → NFL

When Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi had an opportunity to try out for the NFL, he took it - or rather, created it. Homeless and sleeping outside a Miami gym waiting for his chance, Sheehy-Guiseppi talked his way into a Cleveland Browns’ tryout by convincing team executives he knew the VP of Player Personnel (he didn’t), but that bluff got him on the field. That’s when the talk morphed into action - he ran the 40 yard dash in 4.38 seconds, turning heads and earning himself a spot at training camp. To top it off, he returned a punt 86 yards for a touchdown in the team’s first preseason game. Though he hasn’t officially made the squad yet, it seems Sheehy-Guiseppi’s determination might just earn him a spot on an NFL roster.

  • In the mood for a double-double? Not the In-N-Out burger, a double-double dismount like the one Simone Biles did this weekend, becoming the first gymnast ever to land the move.

  • We want YOU to enlist in the… Space Force? Congress is stepping closer to making that a reality.
