Big Tech & Antitrust Investigations

Leaked minutes

In a leaked, two-hour recording of an internal meeting at Facebook published online Tuesday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg discussed the future of the company. He also addressed the antitrust investigations and Senator Elizabeth Warren’s proposal to break up companies like Amazon, Google, and Facebook.

Meanwhile…
In early September, dozens of state attorneys general launched antitrust investigations into Facebook and Google over alleged anticompetitive behavior. In July, the Federal Trade Commission charged Facebook with $5 billion in fines over its failure to protect user privacy. In a separate ongoing probe, the FTC is working with the Department of Justice to investigate whether Facebook, Google, Apple, and Amazon have engaged in illegal monopolization tactics.

One door closes…

Kendrick Norton, Jr. was living the life he dreamt of - he had a successful career playing college ball at ‘The U,’ and was signed by the Miami Dolphins as a defensive tackle. But then, late on the night of July 4, everything changed.

A car accident crushed his left arm, causing him to lose about half the blood in his body. His girlfriend, Kira, was in the car with him and stayed behind to look for the lost arm when the ambulance left, hoping it could be reattached. When she finally found it, the damage was too extensive to salvage. Kendrick became an amputee.

But when he woke up from two days in a coma, Kendrick wasn’t depressed – he was just grateful to be alive. Although he misses football every day, he says he now has an even greater opportunity to help others. With the support of his team and coaches, he’s on the road to recovery and has found a new passion – he’s establishing a nonprofit called Kendrick Norton Angel’s Initiative, which will be geared toward helping children cope after losing limbs.

The un-caped crusader

Laronda Marshall is a bus driver in Miami. But the highlights of her six-year career in transit tell a story that isn’t often associated with public transportation – she’s saved three lives so far.

Last week, Laronda noticed that one of her passengers was slumped down in his seat. She stopped the bus to check on him, but he was unresponsive. Using skills she’d gained as a certified nursing assistant earlier in her life, she pulled the man out of his seat and began CPR until the paramedics arrived. If she hadn’t, they said, the man wouldn’t have made it.

That wasn’t the first time, though - less than two years ago, Laronda saved a man who’d been hit by a car and was lying on the side of the road. Parking her bus so that he was protected, Laronda called for help and stayed with him until he was on his way to the hospital. And just a month after that, she rescued a small child who was lost and wandering in the middle of a busy road. As it turns out, not all heroes wear capes – some wear public transit uniforms.
