 | Impeachment Update | Last Tuesday, House Democrats formally introduced two articles of impeachment against President Trump, charging him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. On Friday, the House Judiciary Committee voted 23 to 17 to approve the articles, and on Monday morning filed an accompanying 638-page report outlining the reasons for impeachment. President Trump penned a six-page letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi yesterday expressing his opposition to the proceedings, and the full House is expected to vote on each article this afternoon. Where do we go from here? If at least one article is approved by a simple majority of the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi will appoint a committee of impeachment managers from among House Democrats to act as prosecutors as the trial heads to the Senate, where Chief Justice John Roberts will preside. A two-thirds majority vote is required to convict and remove the president from office. What do the polls say? Here’s the latest public opinion polls on impeachment from Emerson, Quinnipiac, ABC News/Washington Post, and YouGov (in order): Support: 45, 45, 49, 47 Oppose: 45, 51, 46, 40 So… what are people saying? |

 | Tackling HungerWhen LSU quarterback Joe Burrow gave his Heisman Award acceptance speech on Saturday, he was only trying to recognize the kids from his hometown. He never dreamed that his words would turn into a movement that has raised $370,000 (and counting) for a food pantry in his home county of Athens, Ohio, where 30% of residents live below the poverty line. In the speech, Burrow stated that he wanted to inspire the children of Athens who deal with food scarcity to dream big. When a fan from Athens saw the speech, they decided to start an online fundraiser to help the same kids that Burrow was encouraging. A Facebook post was created with the goal of raising $1,000 for the Athens County Food Pantry, an organization that serves 3,400 meals a week to those in need. After Burrow retweeted details of the fundraising efforts to his 137,000 followers, the number kept rising - the current goal is now $400,000. Burrow and Drabold’s team efforts will ensure that hundreds of children get to eat this holiday season, and it all started because a star player decided to use his winning platform as a way to encourage others to never give up. | | Sports Illustrated → |
Good Josh HuntingYou never know what good can come of sheer determination and a powerful will to try. That’s what one U.S. Army Veteran discovered during his epic journey from unqualified local school janitor to university physics student in just three short weeks. Joshua Carroll was in high school when the 9/11 attacks occurred, which prompted him to enlist in the military upon completing his GED. After serving three tours in Iraq, Carroll returned home to Blacksburg, Virginia feeling lost and depressed. He was working as a janitor at a local school when he saw a copy of Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time in the library - right then and there, he decided to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a physicist. Inspired and determined, Carroll began the process of teaching himself complex mathematics through YouTube videos, managing to convince the admissions staff at Radford University to let him skip the physics prerequisites if he could learn trigonometry on his own. Lo and behold, he ended up acing the test and graduated as one of the top physicists in his class. Carroll teaches us that reaching for the stars can land us among them (or studying them) and that much like space, our potential is unlimited. | | Good News Network → |
