Coronavirus: A Cause for Concern?

On Saturday, the official death toll from the coronavirus outbreak reached 811 (with now over 40,000 confirmed cases), surpassing the 774 who died from SARS in 2002-03. All but two of the deaths have occurred in mainland China - Hong Kong and the Philippines have confirmed one death each.

A quick bit of context…

  • SARS: 8,098 confirmed cases and 774 deaths.
  • Seasonal Flu: An estimated 22 million cases this season and 12,000 deaths.
  • Swine Flu (H1N1): An estimated 11% to 22% of the global population was infected in 2009, resulting in 150,000 to 500,000 deaths.

Now, a different perspective...
We’ve previously focused on the health repercussions of the coronavirus, but the sickness has had a wide-ranging economic impact as well.

  • Auto: Many companies (including GM, Volkswagen, Toyota) have halted operations in all Chinese factories.
  • Tech: Earlier this month, major tech giants (Microsoft, Apple, Google, etc.) announced they would temporarily shut down all Chinese locations.
  • Tourism: Dozens of airlines have suspended flights to and from China, while more recently thousands of passengers were quarantined aboard two separate cruise ships.
  • Markets: On Friday, S&P Global Ratings downgraded China’s forecasted GDP growth by 0.75%. After a ~3% dip in late January, both the Dow and S&P 500 have recovered to near-record highs.

Sharing is Caring

Scientists have long debated the question of nature vs. nurture. A new study from the University of Washington found that altruism - the concern for the well-being of others - can be seen in children as young as 19 months. In an experiment, toddlers were given a desirable snack to see if the child would offer it to an adult in need, even if they, themselves, were hungry.

Over half of the children in the control group responded by offering their food, with those brought up with siblings being even more likely to give - suggesting that altruism could be a learned trait.

Teach A Man To Fish…

After years of steady decline in fish populations around the globe, recent findings show that closely managed fish stocks are recovering from low populations, leading to a rebound in a prominent food source.

The most positive aspect of the research is that some fish stocks at dangerously low levels can be saved simply by limiting commercial fishing to under a certain limit.

  • The Blind Side… according to MIT Technology Review, researchers have utilized experimental technology to help a blind woman play a video game sent directly to her brain via an implant.

  • Fly, you fools… a British Airways flight (accelerated by winds from Storm Ciera) has reportedly set the world record for the fastest subsonic transatlantic flight at 4 hours and 56 minutes.

  • Bad Apple… Apple has been fined 25 million euros ($27m) for deliberately slowing down old iPhone models without notifying consumers.

A) 3 seconds

The record currently belongs to Yusheng Du, who solved a standard 3x3x3 cube in an astonishing 3.47 seconds.

Not to be outdone, a robot developed by two MIT graduate students solved a Rubik’s Cube in just 0.38 seconds (seriously, you gotta watch this.)
