Mr. Stone’s Wild Ride

Former Trump aide Roger Stone was sentenced to three years and four months in prison by a federal judge yesterday after he was found guilty of seven counts of witness tampering, lying to Congress, and obstructing a Congressional investigation (which resulted in the Mueller Report).

How we got here:

  • On Feb. 10, the DOJ’s prosecutors filed a sentencing memo that recommended Stone serve a prison term lasting between 7.25 and 9 years.
  • Trump later tweeted his disapproval of the recommendation, calling it a “miscarriage of justice.”
  • In a memo to the court filed the following day, the department reversed its original decision and asked for a shorter, unspecified term.

Some disagreed with the decision:

  • In the aftermath of the department’s reversal, all four DOJ prosecutors withdrew from the case, with one resigning entirely.
  • In an interview with ABC News, Attorney General and DOJ head William Barr said the president’s tweets made it “impossible to do his job.”
  • Thousands of former DOJ officials - who collectively served under administrations on both sides of the aisle - signed a letter calling for Barr to resign.

So… what are people saying?
