Taking a WikiLeak

Today, a British court will begin the extradition hearing of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The hearing will determine whether Assange is sent to the U.S. to face trial on 17 counts of espionage.

A Blast from the Past
Since 2006, WikiLeaks has made an archive of classified information publicly available on its website. Examples include:

  • A series of U.S. government leaks provided by U.S. Army officer Chelsea Manning, which included footage of U.S. soldiers gunning down Iraqi civilians.
  • Thousands of hacked emails belonging to Hilary Clinton that were obtained by the Russian government preceding the 2016 election.
  • Documents detailing U.S. involvement in the arming, training, and funding of Yemeni forces for six years before the Yemen War began.

What’s next?
Assange’s UK extradition trial will likely stretch into June. Should he face extradition, his U.S. trial has major First Amendment implications - no journalist has ever been fully prosecuted by the U.S. government for publishing leaked documents.

So… what are people saying?

Weinstein Trial Update

On Friday, the jury in the trial of Harvey Weinstein sent a note to the judge asking whether it was possible to be hung on two charges and be unanimous on the others. The judge responded by telling the jury to keep deliberating - Weinstein could be convicted of predatory sexual assault should the jury find him guilty on the two charges in question (carrying a sentence of up to life in prison).

Over the weekend, three women not involved in the suit testified about uncharged crimes of sexual assault allegedly perpetrated by Weinstein.
