Don’t Stop Me Now

Good morning. Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? One Australian woman seems uniquely qualified to answer both pressing questions - she was recently awarded the Guinness World Record after submitting ticket stubs from 108 different screenings of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Coronavirus: Causing Concern

The U.S. market on Thursday fell into what is known as ‘correction territory’ - down more than 10% from a record-high close just ten days ago. The decline is almost solely attributed to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.

A quick bit of context…
There have been more than 82,500 confirmed cases, and over 2,800 deaths. For comparison:

  • SARS: 8,098 confirmed cases and 774 deaths.
  • Seasonal Flu: An estimated 29 million U.S. cases this season and 16,000 deaths.
  • Swine Flu (H1N1): An estimated 11% to 22% of the global population was infected in 2009, resulting in 150,000 to 500,000 deaths.

A recent study of the passengers aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship found that each infected person on average passed the virus on to about 2.2 people, consistent with prior estimates.

How does it spread?
Current knowledge of the novel disease is largely based on what is known about similar coronaviruses. Per the CDC:

  • The virus is spread mainly from person-to-person, via respiratory droplets (i.e. mucus) when an infected patient coughs or sneezes.
  • The symptoms of the virus overlap with both the flu and common cold (fever, cough, shortness of breath).
  • According to preliminary WHO statistics, approximately 80% of coronavirus cases are considered mild, while about 2% have resulted in fatality.

What’s next?
Biotech company Moderna has shipped the first vaccine to U.S. government researchers for testing, with the fastest-ever clinical trial planned for the end of April. Various researchers and health officials have said a widely available coronavirus vaccine is likely 12 to 18 months away.
