The Israel Election Saga

Israel’s third general election in the past 11 months was held yesterday, an unprecedented event for the country.

Back to the beginning…
Benjamin Netanyahu, the incumbent prime minister, has been locked in a stalemate with challenger Benny Gantz since the first general election was held last April.

  • Round 1: Netanyahu seemingly won a majority, yet was unable to form a ruling coalition.
  • Round 2: The next election was held in September - Netanyahu supporters won a slight plurality, but the incumbent PM again failed to form a government.
  • Round 2.1: Gantz was then given a chance to build his own ruling coalition, but he too failed.

Indictment Excitement
As the elections played out, Netanyahu also came under legal pressure from Israel’s attorney general.

  • The prime minister was indicted in November on three separate corruption cases, including a charge of bribery.
  • Netanyahu’s trial will begin on Mar. 17 - potentially concurrent with his third attempt at forming a ruling coalition.

Moving forward…
According to exit polls (which have previously been unreliable at predicting results), Netanyahu supporters are expected to be two seats shy of winning a ruling majority. Official election results will likely be available later today.
