Spring In Your Step

Good morning. Here’s some good news to start your day: today marks the first official day of spring - the earliest start to the season since 1896.

The Race to the White House

Three Democratic primaries were held on Tuesday (Arizona, Florida, Illinois) after Ohio postponed their contest at the last minute. Joe Biden won a decisive victory in all three states - the closest being a 12-point margin in AZ - further extending his lead over Bernie Sanders.

And the scoreboard shows...
There are still 66 unpledged delegates that will be fully allocated once 100% of each state’s votes have been counted. The delegate count so far (1,991 needed for a majority):

  • Biden: 1,180 delegates (19 states won)
  • Sanders: 884 delegates (8 states won)

An uphill battle...
Bernie Sanders is facing an all-but-impossible comeback - FiveThirtyEight currently gives Joe Biden a 99.1% chance to win the nomination. With the Democrats’ proportional system of allocating delegates, Sanders would need to:

  • Win a majority of states going forward, and
  • Win those states by large margins to make up his ~300-delegate disadvantage.

What’s Next?
Sanders’ campaign manager has said they will “assess his campaign” shortly after Tuesday’s results were made public. The next scheduled primary is March 29 in Puerto Rico, though it will likely be postponed until April 26 due to coronavirus. Should that delay occur, the next round of primaries would take place on April 4.

Iraqi President Taps New PM

Iraqi President Barham Saleh formally named Adnan al-Zurfi as his prime minister-delegate, after the country’s political parties could not decide on a consensus candidate. Mr. Zurfi will have 30 days to form a cabinet and win parliamentary approval, which seems unlikely given the current opposition to his nomination.

More: Iraqi officials said at least three rockets struck Baghdad’s Green Zone (2km away from the U.S. Embassy) on Tuesday - the fourth such attack in under a week.
