Old Dog, New Tricks

Good morning. In order to abide by the statewide quarantine, Stone House Urban Winery in Hagerstown, Maryland has begun exclusively offering curbside pickup. But the precautions don’t stop there - in order to further abide by strict social distancing protocols, the winery has been sending out customers’ drink orders by way of an 11-year-old brindle boxer named Soda Pup.

The Race To The White House

The coronavirus pandemic has temporarily placed the Democratic presidential race on hold. The most recent primaries were held in Illinois, Florida, and Arizona on Mar. 17, while the next primary won’t be held until at least April 7. As of today, fifteen states and one territory have postponed their nominating contests.

Check The Scoreboard
The race has been narrowed to two candidates:

  • Joe Biden: 1,215 delegates (19 states won)
  • Bernie Sanders: 909 delegates (9 states won)

To win an outright majority, 1,991 delegates must be captured by either candidate.

On, Wisconsin
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has been the only governor thus far to buck the recent cancelation trend. He remains determined to push forward with the original April 7 date for the state’s elections, which also include the State Supreme Court and other local officials.

  • The next scheduled primary after Wisconsin is in Alaska, where the Democratic Party has canceled all in-person voting and will instead conduct the election entirely by mail (with ballots due April 10).

You’ve Got Mail
Wyoming, Ohio, and Hawaii have also banned in-person voting and switched to a strictly mail-in system. About two-thirds of states currently offer “no excuse” absentee ballots (meaning anyone can request a ballot for any reason), while a handful of others have issued emergency exceptions for the upcoming primaries. Another thing to note:

  • An NYU Law School institute recently estimated the total cost of ensuring a mail-in option is available to all voters is between $982 million and $1.4 billion.
  • The $2.1 trillion ‘phase three’ stimulus package allocated $400 million in election security grants to help states adapt to the current health crisis.

Upcoming Attractions
Four more nominating contests are scheduled to take place this month following Wisconsin’s April 7 elections:

  • April 10: Alaska* (15 delegates)
  • April 17: Wyoming* (14 delegates)
  • April 26: Puerto Rico (51 delegates)
  • April 28: Ohio* (136 delegates)

*In-person voting has been canceled.

So… what are people saying?

The only person who wins if Sanders stays in the race is Donald J. Trump

Science Rules!

Many people might wish to get involved in the scientific community’s efforts against COVID-19, but don’t know where to start. A new initiative from scientists at UC San Francisco allows anyone over 18 to become a participant in the fight against the virus.

The program, dubbed COVID-19 Citizen Science (CCS) is based around a smartphone app that prompts users to provide data that researchers can then analyze to gain insight into the disease.

Baby Talk

A recent spike in COVID-19 patients has threatened to overwhelm the American health care network, leaving medical workers forced to improvise creative solutions to increasing shortages of equipment.

One such ingenious solution has been adopted in hospitals from coast-to-coast - using two-way baby monitors to interact with isolated COVID-19 patients, thereby eliminating care workers’ exposure to the virus.
