“The bad news is time flies. The good news is you're the pilot.”

Where’s The Beef?

John Tyson, chairman of Tyson Foods, took out a full-page ad in the Washington Post, New York Times, and Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Sunday in an attempt to warn readers of the dire circumstances facing America’s food supply chain - especially in regards to meat.

Closing Time
Thirty-seven meatpacking plants across the country have closed their doors or limited operations due to the virus. According to industry experts, overall U.S. meat production is down about 25% over the past three weeks.

  • The Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting has recorded more than 4,400 positive cases of COVID-19 tied to meatpacking facilities, leading to 18 worker deaths across nine states.

President Trump late Tuesday invoked the Defense Production Act, classifying meat plants as critical infrastructure and ordering them to remain open.

Wrong Place, Wrong Time
American produce farmers have not been spared from the impact of the virus either. Tens of millions of pounds of produce are slowly rotting in fields with nowhere to go after the shutdown of the food-service industry, which represents 40% of the nationwide demand for produce.

  • At the same time, food banks across the U.S. have seen demand increase by an average of 70% according to Feeding America, who estimates that 40% of those served are new to the system.

What’s next?
The USDA has allocated $3 billion towards buying up excess meat, dairy, and produce for food aid programs. The so-called Coronavirus Food Assistance Program - which also includes $16 billion in direct support to agricultural producers - will begin shipping to food banks starting May 15.

In just three weeks, the sequel to Trolls (which pulled in $153.7 million at the box office) has reportedly already made Universal the same amount of revenue as the original did over its entire five month box-office stint, since movie theaters typically receive ~50% of the box office compared to a ~20% cut taken by streaming services.
