 | Deliver Us | Last August, the FAA began issuing waivers to companies allowing them to use drones for commercial use. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, these companies have rushed to expand their drone delivery programs in an attempt to meet the increased demand for delivered goods. What Can Brown Do For You? UPS on Monday announced a partnership with CVS to pilot a prescription drug delivery service test program at The Villages, a large Florida retirement community. - UPS-operated drones will pick up medication from participating CVS locations, and fly it to an area near the retirement community so residents can pick their order up.
- All 135,000 residents of The Villages are expected to have access to the service in early May.
Spreading Their Wings Alphabet subsidiary Wing laid claim to the title of America’s first drone delivery service when it opened for business last October in Christiansburg, Virginia. - At first, the company only offered limited delivery from a select few companies - FedEx, Walgreens, and local retailer Sugar Magnolia.
- Over the past few weeks, Wing has expanded the number of items and businesses available to customers in response to the statewide lockdown due to COVID-19.
According to a company spokesperson, demand for Wing’s Virginia delivery service has more than doubled since the outbreak of the virus. A similar increase has been seen at the company’s other test programs in Australia and Finland. What’s next? In last year’s FAA Aerospace Forecast, the agency predicted the U.S. market for commercial drones could triple in size between 2019 and 2023, while McKinsey has estimated that commercial drones could have an annual impact of $31 billion to $46 billion on GDP by the year 2026. So… what are people saying? |
