 | Hit Me With Your Best Shot | Merck - one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world - announced it has begun the development of two different COVID-19 vaccines yesterday. Merck also disclosed plans to license an oral drug that has shown promise in treating the virus. Around The World There are over 100 different vaccine candidates currently in development according to the WHO, with ten having reached the clinical evaluation stage. - Chinese vaccine company CanSino on Friday became the first to report full Phase 1 clinical trial results in a peer-reviewed journal (The Lancet). The company earlier this month began a six-month Phase 2 trial in Wuhan.
- The U.S. Health Department last Thursday announced a more than $1 billion agreement with UK pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. The deal will fund the production of at least 400 million doses of the company’s vaccine candidate, which is licensed from Oxford University.
- Moderna last week released promising initial results from an ongoing Phase 1 trial of its vaccine candidate, though researchers said much further study is needed.
A Different Approach Earlier this month, the FDA issued new guidelines intended to assist in the more than 130 ongoing clinical trials of products with the potential to treat or prevent COVID-19. - UK health officials authorized Gilead’s antiviral drug remdesivir for use in select hospitalized COVID-19 patients yesterday. Last week, the New England Journal of Medicine published preliminary results from an ongoing Phase 3 clinical of the drug.
- Dr. Anthony Fauci on Wednesday became the first U.S. health official to definitively say that malaria drug hydroxychloroquine is not an effective COVID-19 treatment based on the available data.
What do people think? According to a recent AP/NORC poll of 1,056 American adults: - 49% of those surveyed said they would receive a vaccine for COVID-19 if it became available today, while 31% said they were unsure.
- 20% of Americans believe a COVID-19 vaccine will be publicly available by the end of 2020, compared to 61% who think it will be available sometime in 2021.
