An Update On COVID-19 In The U.S.

Cases are increasing in 29 states, remaining level in 10, and decreasing in 11 (as of yesterday). Wednesday’s total of 38,000+ new U.S. infections is the highest single-day increase to-date.

A deeper dive…
The recent spike in cases has been attributed largely to people under 35 in several states, including California and Texas. A few other updates:

  • More than 60% of inpatient hospital beds are occupied in 33 states across the West Coast, Southeast, and East Coast. ICUs in many southern states are at greater than 70% capacity (view the full map here).
  • According to new estimates from the CDC, U.S. cases may be 10x higher than reported - which would mean at least 23 million people have contracted the virus. Blood sample data revealed that for every confirmed case, ten more individuals had COVID-19 antibodies.

What’s Next?
On Monday, Louisiana committed to remaining in the second phase of their reopening plans due to a spike in cases.

  • Texas also paused their reopening process yesterday and pledged to make more hospital space available for COVID-19 patients. Since the beginning of June, the number of Texans hospitalized with the virus has doubled.

NYC is on track to enter phase 3 of its reopening plan on July 6th. Hospitalizations in the state fell below 1,000 yesterday for the first time since mid-March.

Supreme Court Immigration Decision

The Supreme Court sided with the Trump Administration on Thursday, authorizing the deportation of immigrants without an appeal if they are discovered less than 100 miles from the border within two weeks of entering. Senate Targets China’s HK Security Law

The Senate passed a sanctions bill by unanimous consent yesterday, targeting people or companies that back China’s proposed national security law. The bill also imposes mandatory sanctions against banks that do business with individuals or companies that support the legislation.

More: Beijing’s new national security law effectively overturns the “one country, two systems” principle that has governed Hong Kong since it was handed over to China by the UK in 1997.
