 | How Are Schools Reopening? | Across the country, states are developing plans to reopen schools in the fall. Here's a look at a few already-established policies: Public Schools: - On Monday, Florida's education commissioner issued an emergency order that requires all public schools to open "at least five days per week for all students" for the fall semester. Teachers in the state have protested the reopening, citing Florida's recent surge in cases.
- While New York’s Gov. Cuomo will make the final decision in early August, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio is planning for partial reopening with attendance limited to 1-3 days per week, and no more than a dozen kids at a time in a single classroom.
Universities: - On Tuesday, ICE announced that international students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities that switch to virtual-only classes this fall must transfer, leave the country, or risk deportation.
- Harvard and MIT filed a joint federal lawsuit Wednesday challenging the decision. The universities argue that ICE failed to give proper public notice or a reasonable basis for the order.
- Eight percent of U.S. colleges have planned for exclusively remote learning, while 25% have opted for a hybrid model (part online, part in-person). Sixty percent of institutions will be entirely in-person, and the remaining 7% are considering a range of possibilities.
What's Next? The Trump administration is working with Congress on the next round of state support to get students back in the classroom. - Vice President Pence on Wednesday said the CDC will revise its school reopening guidelines after President Trump tweeted his disagreement (check out the current guidelines).

Among other things, the audit cites Facebook’s decision not to hold politicians accountable to its fact-check program as a specific failure in the company’s policies. More: Separately, Facebook suspended a network of social media accounts connected to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro it said were used to spread misinformation. Even More: The company also removed more than 100 social media accounts and pages with links to Trump associate Roger Stone and the far-right Proud Boys movement for posting misinformation. |
