 | Chaos In Chicago | Parts of downtown Chicago were locked down Sunday night after hundreds ransacked the upscale Magnificent Mile and other shopping areas. Over 100 people were arrested, two were shot, and 13 officers were injured. A deeper dive… Some looters reportedly said the unrest was sparked by reports of a police-involved killing of a Black man late Sunday. Police say this was social media misinformation, which seemed to encourage people to engage in violence downtown.
- Chicago’s police superintendent said that officers responded to a call about an armed man in the Englewood area Sunday afternoon. Officers identified the man and pursued him on foot, then returned fire - striking the man - after he discharged the first shot at them. The man was hospitalized and is expected to survive.
- The event immediately led to a violent standoff between a crowd and dozens of officers. Later, widespread looting of businesses - including a Tesla dealership and local mom-and-pop shops - began, prompting police to deploy 400 officers downtown. Officials closed highway ramps and raised bridges amidst the chaos, and temporarily halted buses and trains. You can see video footage here.
What’s Next? Downtown Chicago is closed indefinitely from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., and police will be sent to outlying neighborhoods to ward off looting this week. Those arrested (along with others caught on videotape) are expected to face charges such as disorderly conduct, looting, and battery against police. - Republican state lawmakers have called for the deployment of state and federal law enforcement, but Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said they aren’t needed, activating a neighborhood protection program instead.
So… what are people saying?

 | The Dogctor Is InIn the spring of 2019, as he finished his sophomore year of high school, Kyle Hanson of Wauwatosa, WI, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The cancer, which affects the immune system, caused the 16-year-old to have difficulty breathing and required five grueling rounds of chemotherapy. Whenever Kyle was left feeling exhausted and miserable throughout the 3-month treatment regimen, his medical facility’s therapy dogs helped bring him joy. Recognizing the positive influence of the comforting canines on his recovery, Kyle is now training his own pooch, a two-year-old poodle named Copper, to serve as a therapy dog for other sick youth. Officially cancer-free as of last October, Kyle has received support for the project from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, who is footing the bill for Copper’s therapy certification.

Intern-al GrowthWhen the pandemic struck in March, Lia Rubel of Barre, VT, despaired as her plans for acquiring a summer internship fell apart.
