Police Shooting In Kenosha Sparks Protests

The Wisconsin National Guard was deployed to Kenosha, WI, on Monday in response to protests that erupted Sunday after Kenosha police shot a Black man identified as 29-year-old Jacob Blake.

A deeper dive…
Protesters set cars on fire, smashed windows, and clashed with police in riot gear (who used tear gas to disperse the crowds) in response to a bystander video of Blake’s shooting posted on social media.

  • In the 20-second video, a Black man (purportedly Blake) can be seen walking around a gray van surrounded by three police officers with drawn weapons. When the man attempts to get in, one of the officers appears to shoot him seven times in the back at close range. (WARNING: Graphic Content - View it here)
  • WI Gov. Tony Evers (D) in a statement Sunday night condemned the shooting. The three officers at the scene were placed on administrative leave - standard practice in a shooting involving police - while the state Justice Department investigates the incident. Authorities did not immediately disclose the race of the three officers, or say whether Blake was armed.

In social media posts Monday afternoon, Blake’s family said he was out of surgery and in stable condition.

What’s Next?
Gov. Evers on Monday called state lawmakers into session to take action on a package of bills he proposed following the death of George Floyd that include a ban on police chokeholds and no-knock search warrants.

  • The Republican-controlled state legislature advocated for a more measured response, with party leaders suggesting they wait until the conclusion of the Wisconsin DOJ’s 30-day internal investigation into the shooting.

Mr. Jones & Me

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) announced the addition of three new companies. Salesforce, Amgen, and Honeywell will join the 30-stock benchmark starting Aug. 31, replacing Exxon Mobil, Pfizer, and Raytheon. Experts say the move was in response to Apple’s recent decision to enact a 4-to-1 stock split, which significantly reduced the DJIA’s tech-sector weighting.

50 Shades Of Green

Most people would consider traveling to all 50 U.S. states to be an impressive accomplishment. Even more impressive is 29-year-old Rodney Smith Jr. of Hunstville, AL, who last year completed his fifth “tour” of the United States - with a charitable twist.

In 2017, Rodney visited all 50 U.S. states to mow a lawn in each state for someone in need of help: a veteran, a single mother, the elderly, or someone who is disabled. The initial journey garnered widespread attention on social media, and enabled Rodney to raise the funds for four additional mowing trips.

Dolls For All

When San Diego native Ariella Pacheco, 17, was a little girl, her parents let her pick out any American Girl doll she liked from a catalog. Naturally, Ariella picked out one with a hair color and style that matched her own. But what about children with rare medical conditions who don’t look like anybody else? Ariella pondered the question as she grew up, and earlier this year came up with a solution.

Over the past several months, Ariella designed and sewed custom cloth dolls for four local children who have among them a noticeable birthmark, surgical scars, a jaw alignment issue, and cranial differences. “I hope through these dolls they can see themselves in a new light and really embrace their beauty,” she told the San Diego Tribune.

The Elephant Outside The Room

Elephants are known to be social creatures, but for the past eight years, a 35-year-old elephant at the Marghazar Zoo in Islamabad, Pakistan, has lived alone. Kaavan the Elephant, who arrived in Pakistan at the age of one, did not always live in isolation - almost one decade ago, his playmate, Saheli, passed away.

This summer, the Pakistani High Court ruled in favor of releasing Kaavan from the zoo and relocating him to the Elephant Nature Park, a sanctuary for rescued animals. The court also ruled that all the zoo’s other animals need to be transferred within 60 days as the facility works to improve its standards for the quality of life of its inhabitants.

Dose of Knowledge Answer

D) Contagious yawning

The study found that those who scored highly on the psychopathic scale were much less likely to catch a contagious yawn. Researchers suggest empathy may have played a role in the experiment, as psychopaths tend to lack it.
