Your One-Minute Economic Update

In virtual remarks delivered on Tuesday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell recommended that Congress and the White House provide additional support to households and businesses affected by the pandemic. (Full video)

Markets
The three major stock indexes closed down slightly on Friday following news of President Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis but rebounded with modest gains on Monday. (Bonus: How the market has historically reacted to presidential health woes)

  • All three indexes fell more than 1% on Tuesday after President Trump tweeted that his representatives would stop negotiation on potential stimulus talks until after the election.
  • The Dow, S&P 500, & Nasdaq finalized significant gains for Q3, with each index capping off its best two-quarter performance since at least 2009.

Employment

The Bureau of Labor’s monthly Jobs Report, published Friday, found that 661k jobs were added to the labor market in September (down from 1.4M added in August). The unemployment rate fell to 7.9% from 8.4% and the labor force participation rate decreased by 0.3 points to 61.4%.

  • The U.S. economy lost roughly 22.2M jobs between February and April, but has recovered more than half of that number since May. Compared to February, ~10.8M fewer Americans currently have jobs.
  • About 1 in 3 Americans are concerned with their job security, according to a WalletHub survey published last month.

Outlook
Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the most recent economic projections showed the U.S. recovery continuing at a solid pace, but cautioned that the outlook remains highly uncertain.

  • U.S. consumer sentiment in September was at its highest level since March, largely due to a more optimistic outlook for the nation’s economy. (Per the University of Michigan monthly report)

The Kyrgyzstan Situation

Following Sunday’s contentious parliamentary election in Kyrgyzstan, opposition groups took over government buildings and freed political prisoners in demonstrations on Tuesday. The protests erupted following an election in which just four of the country’s sixteen political parties gained seats in parliament, leading to accusations of election fraud and vote-buying. The twelve excluded parties reportedly signed a document refusing to accept Sunday’s results and demanding a new election.

Having A Ball

Last week, 72-year-old Randy Long of Montgomery, AL, was cleaning out his garage when he discovered an old bucket of baseballs that he used to pitch to his son, and later his grandson, for batting practice when they were young. With his son now 46 years old and his grandson 23, Randy wistfully dropped off the baseballs by the local batting cages, leaving with them a note encouraging fathers to cherish time spent with their young children.

As the gloomy grandfather gave up his beloved baseballs, his wife snapped a picture of the endearing note and sent it to their grandson, Ethan, who posted the photo on Twitter. After the tweet went viral, Ethan drove two hours from Montgomery this past Sunday to spend the afternoon in the batting cages with Randy.

I Like To Moo-ve It

This summer, a baby cow from Texas named Ruby Sue was born with her back legs fused together. The condition does not cause her any pain but makes it impossible to stand or walk independently, putting the little calf at risk of being euthanized by her owner -- until Safe in Austin, a family-run nonprofit that rescues at-risk animals and children, discovered her plight.

Resolved to provide Ruby with a fulfilling life, Safe in Austin partnered with Walkin’ Pets, a New Hampshire-based company that builds wheelchairs for immobilized pets. The company, which has helped make the world accessible for ducks, chickens, and tortoises, designed a custom-made wheelchair for Ruby and donated it to the staff at Safe in Austin, allowing Ruby to take her very first steps. Just Dance

Chuck and Lori Yielding’s 14-year-old son, Aiden, is currently battling leukemia and started receiving chemotherapy treatment at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, TX, earlier this year. When the hospital staff told the parents that only one of them would be allowed to stay with Aiden during his treatment due to new COVID-19 regulations, Chuck was understandably devastated. Lori works at the hospital, so she was the clear choice to stay with Aiden.

Determined to support his son during the taxing treatment, Chuck developed a unique way to be present for Aiden while following the hospital’s safety measures. Every Tuesday, as Aiden undergoes his rounds of chemotherapy, Chuck puts on a dance show from the parking lot three stories below his son’s window, encouraging the delighted Aiden to mimic his funky moves.
