 | Senate SCOTUS Hearings Begin | Judge Amy Coney Barrett began the first day of testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday. (Full video) A deeper dive… The 22 members of the committee, along with Barrett, each received ten minutes to deliver an opening statement on Monday, the contents of which seemed to be largely determined by party affiliation.
- The Republican committee members focused on Barrett’s personal story and repeatedly brought up Democrats’ past questioning about her religious background during her 2017 federal court confirmation hearing, describing it as unfair targeting.
- The Democratic committee members criticized what they called a “hypocritical” confirmation process, and zeroed in on the potential that Barrett’s addition threatens the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a challenge to the Affordable Care Act on Nov. 10. Senate Republicans have expressed a desire to schedule a confirmation vote on Barrett by Oct. 29. What’s Next? Barrett’s confirmation hearings continue with a Q&A period later today and Wednesday. For Thursday, the final day of hearings, outside witnesses will testify for and against Barrett’s nomination.
- After the hearings conclude, the committee is expected to vote on Oct. 22, with a wider Senate confirmation vote likely following within the next week. As the situation currently stands, Senate Republicans are projected to have 51 “Yes” votes.
So… what are people saying?

Labor Of LoveWhen David Branscome, a professor at Florida State University, teaches his 180-person course in ancient mythology over Zoom each week, he is usually greeted by a sea of blank screens, as students opt to keep their cameras off during lectures. Despite this technological divide, David still attempts to make his young learners feel recognized and appreciated, bidding them heartfelt farewells at the end of each lesson. Last week, the passionate professor received an unexpectedly endearing response after the day’s lecture, as one of his students signed off of the call by saying, “I love you.” Delighted by David’s authentic reaction to the remark, the other students in the class have now taken to ending each lecture by saying, “I love you” to their professor, recording the heartwarming practice on TikTok, where it has gone viral.

Call Of The (Re)WildCharlie Burrell was just 21 years old when he inherited his family’s 3,500-acre farming estate in West Sussex, England, in the late 1990s. The young Charlie was soon convinced that the land he had acquired was cursed, as more than 200 years of use had drained the soil of nutrients, making it nearly impossible to produce crops using conventional farming techniques. Having just graduated from agricultural school, Charlie teamed up with his wife, Isabella, to attempt a revolutionary conservation technique to save the Burrell Family land. Through a process known as “rewilding,” over the past two decades, the Burrells have converted the area into one of the most biodiverse regions in all of Britain, filling in irrigation canals and bringing in native animals to return the land to a completely natural state. The land, which is now agriculturally bountiful, is also used for camping and wildlife safaris. (Video)
