Tech CEOs Testify Before Senate

Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Jack Dorsey (Twitter), and Sundar Pichai (Alphabet) testified before the Senate Commerce Committee on Wednesday. (Full video)

A deeper dive…
The topic of the hearing was
Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, which states that internet companies aren’t liable for third-party content posted on their platforms.

  • The three chief executives called the law crucial to free expression on the internet, giving their companies the tools to strike a balance between preserving free speech and moderating content.

They also agreed that companies should be held liable if they act as a publisher, but denied any political bias in their editorial decision-making.

A Trip Down The Aisle
The senators’ lines of questioning seemed to be largely determined by party affiliation:

  • Republican members of the committee targeted Twitter and Facebook for their decisions to limit the distribution of a NY Post story regarding Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s son. They also focused on alleged inconsistencies in the way the companies flag President Trump’s account compared to other world leaders.
  • Democratic members of the committee called the hearing a “sham,” with several senators saying that it was held to help President Trump’s re-election efforts. They also asked the CEOs about the spread of misinformation on social media, and the platforms’ efforts to contain it.

What’s Next?
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have
introduced a number of bills that would alter or abolish protections given to internet companies under Section 230, though no formal votes have been held.

  • Earlier this month, the Federal Communications Commission announced its intent to move forward with regulation that would reinterpret Section 230.

So… what are people saying?

Right-wing misinformation could gain steam post-election

Trial By Fire

Travis Ochs of Boulder County, CO, had very little time to think last week as the encroaching CalWood wildfire threatened to consume his ranch, a property that has been in his family since the 1940s. Rushing to first ensure his family members' safety, Travis then scrambled to secure his beloved horse and donkey – Adam and Ennis, respectively – but quickly realized there was not enough time to load the animals into the horse trailer.

The devastated Travis was forced to leave behind Adam and Ennis as the Och Family narrowly escaped the ferocious flames. Unable to sleep, he agonized over the fate of his beloved equines. Finally, at the end of the week, Travis received a call from the local wilderness ranger station and was overjoyed to learn that, although the fire had destroyed his home, Adam and Ennis had survived.

Reunited And It Feels So Good

Holocaust survivors Ruth Brandspiegel and Israel “Sasha” Eisenberg first met as children in 1946 at a displaced persons camp in Austria. Their two families, who were placed in the same barracks at the facility, immediately connected -- even finding they hailed from the same hometown in Poland. Although Ruth and Sasha grew to be close friends, they fell out of contact with one another after their families departed from the camp in 1949.

Then, in late September of this year, Ruth – who now lives in Philadelphia – was attending a virtual Yom Kippur service when she heard a voice announce Sasha’s name on the call. Ruth, who had not heard from her old friend in more than 70 years, decided to investigate, finding that she had lived less than 60 miles away from her childhood companion for years. On October 13th, Ruth and Sasha shared a socially-distanced and long-overdue reunion in East Brunswick, NJ.

I’m Coming Home

Since September, firefighter Josh Padron of San Jose, CA, has served as one of the thousands of first responders combating the devastating wildfires. Working tirelessly to contain two separate blazes, Josh has had to spend a total of 27 days away from his family, an absence that has been incredibly hard on his 10-year-old daughter, Eliana.

Thus, to bring his daughter joy amidst the taxing atmosphere of the wildfires and the pandemic, Josh decided to surprise Eliana by returning from his most recent firefighting shift several days early. In a video of the special moment, the proud daddy’s girl reacts to her father’s return by leaping to her feet and bursting into tears, greeting her heroic parent with a tight embrace.
