🇺🇸 Stimulus Update
|
A group of ten Senate Republicans released details of a ~$618B COVID-19 relief proposal on Monday, one day after sending a letter to President Biden requesting a meeting to find bipartisan compromise on a bill.
-
Biden’s administration has proposed its own ~$1.9T plan. (The details)
🤿 A deeper dive…
The ten Republican senators met with President Biden yesterday afternoon to discuss the proposal, which includes:
-
$160B towards the health care response to the pandemic, including vaccine distribution, a “massive expansion” of testing, and protective gear and funds for rural hospitals, according to a draft.
-
An estimated $200B towards direct payments of $1K - along with $500 per dependent - to individuals earning up to $40K per year ($80K per household), with reduced payments to those who make between $40K and $50K (no payments for incomes above $50K/$100K per household).
-
$300 per week in enhanced federal unemployment benefits through June.
-
$40B towards the Paycheck Protection Program for small businesses.
-
$20B to reopen schools.
Absent from the bill are Democratic priorities such as gradually raising the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour and funding for state and local governments – both of which are components of Biden’s proposal.
What’s Next?
Winning the support of ten Republicans would be significant for Biden in the 50-50 Senate, where VP Kamala Harris holds the tie-breaking vote.
-
If an eventual compromise bill receives full Democratic support, the legislation would reach the 60-vote threshold necessary to avoid any potential blocking efforts in the divided Senate.
-
However, congressional Democrats are also considering passing a relief package through a process known as budget reconciliation, which allows legislation to pass the Senate with a simple majority if it is limited to measures with a budgetary impact.

shutdown around New Delhi.

🇻🇳 Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party formally approved an economic blueprint for the 2021-2025 period at its quinquennial congress (occurring once every five years… we learned a new word yesterday, too). Officials said the plan would boost Vietnam’s growing role as a key manufacturing hub for global tech giants like Samsung or Intel, while also attempting to raise the country’s profile from a low-cost labor destination to a center for science and technology.

💰 Robinhood Reloads
Robinhood raised another $2.4B from shareholders yesterday, adding on to $1B the company raised last week. The combined $3.4B, which represents more than Robinhood had previously raised in the eight years since it launched, gives the company a cushion to cover the rising collateral requirements associated with recently-volatile stocks like GameStop (which fell nearly 31% yesterday).
More: The price of silver rose at much as 13% yesterday to close at an eight-year high. The swing was largely attributed to a Reddit-influenced movement in the news – a claim the users of r/WallStreetBets vehemently deny.
