🏛️ Congress & Election Reform

The House passed a sweeping election reform bill on Wednesday by a 220-210 vote (one Democrat joined all Republicans in voting against).

  • Called the For The People Act, or H.R. 1, the legislation contains a number of provisions designed to expand voting access.
  • It also features several “anti-corruption” measures Democrats argue strengthen ethics rules for public servants, increase transparency around campaign finance, and restrict lobbying.

A similar package was passed by the Democrat-controlled House in 2019, but not taken up for consideration in the Republican-led Senate.

🤿 A deeper dive…
Among other things, the 791-page bill would:

  • Establish national standards mandating states offer no-excuse absentee voting, online and same-day voter registration, and 15 days of early voting nationwide.
  • Mandate the creation of independent commissions to draw voting districts in each state, rather than the state legislature (in an effort to end ‘gerrymandering).
  • Restore voting rights to felons who have been released from prison.
  • Automatically register eligible voters whenever they interact with government agencies (e.g. the Department of Motor Vehicles). Voters can choose to opt-out of automatic registration.
  • Require presidential and vice presidential candidates to make their tax returns publicly available.
  • Require organizations engaging in political activity to disclose the name and contribution amount of any donor giving more than $10K.

⏭️ What’s Next?
The legislation faces long odds in the Senate, where all 50 Democrats would need to be joined by 10 Republicans to overcome a filibuster.

  • Republicans are arguing the bill’s push to expand voting access would give House Democrats an advantage and invite election fraud.
  • They also contend that election rules should be left in the hands of the states when it comes to things like early voting, voter eligibility, and election integrity.

President Biden said he would sign the bill into law if it passes the House and Senate.

📝 George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

The House passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act by a 220-212 vote late Wednesday (2 Dems voted against, while 1 R voted ‘yes’ by mistake). Among other things, the wide-ranging police reform bill would:

  • Ban chokeholds, along with no-knock warrants in certain cases.
  • Overhaul qualified immunity for law enforcement.
  • Redirect funding to community-based policing programs.

The legislation appears unlikely to win the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster in the Senate.

More: Arizona’s House approved a bill Wednesday that would restrict large app marketplaces from requiring developers to exclusively use the marketplace's payments processing system for in-app purchases.

🐑 Furry Friends Friday: Un’baa’lievable

It’s understood sheep need to be shorn at least once a year to keep their coat light enough for optimal health – if not maintained, the wool will continue to grow and grow.

  • When Baarack the sheep was found wandering last month in a forest near Melbourne, Australia, he sported a overgrown coat you have to see to believe:

Weighing in at an astonishing 77 pounds, Baarack received a much overdue shearing thanks to his rescuers at Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary.

  • The sanctuary believes that Baarack used to have an owner, but the thickly matted coat around his face caused his ear tag to fall off somewhere in the wild.

The farm sanctuary posted a TikTok of the sheep’s amazing transformation, which quickly went viral and captured hearts around the globe.

It “all goes to show what incredibly resilient and brave animals sheep really are,” said Kyle Behrand, a sanctuary employee. “We could not love them any more if we tried.” 🥰
