IBM published a comprehensive quantum computing timeline on Tuesday. The company predicts it can deliver massive computing power alongside a tough-to-achieve low rate of errors by 2023. Unlike the bits in classical computers that can represent two states of information (0s and 1s in binary code), quantum bits - or qubits - can hold multiple states of information at once, raising the potential for exponentially increased computing power.

Late To His Own Funeral

This month, 80-year-old Harry Harvey of Yorkshire, England, disappeared while hiking in Yorkshire Dales National Park during a hailstorm. In short order, more than 100 members of the local police, the Royal Air Force, and the Swaledale Mountain Rescue team mobilized to find the missing mountaineer. After four days of fruitless searching, the rescue team assembled a press conference at a pub situated within the national park to share the bad news.

That night, the quaint establishment was packed with police, Harry’s concerned family members, and one very special guest – Harry himself. The experienced hiker, who had been spotted by a wildlife photographer, surprised attendees by wandering into the pub during the press conference. Despite the worry the incident caused his family, Harry claims to have had a blast during his elusive expedition.

Just Keep Grinning

The Burmese roofed turtle, native to the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar, is known for its oddly endearing facial expressions, as the shape of its beak gives the reptile the appearance of sporting a nonstop grin (picture). However, in the 1990s, overhunting, egg harvesting, and medicinal use of the turtle led to the species' near-extinction – giving the amiable-looking animal very little to smile about.

In 2001, biologist Gerald Kuchling of the University of Western Australia learned that a single Burmese roofed turtle had turned up in a Hong Kong pet shop and, inspired by the news, teamed up with the Myanmar Forest Department to launch a rehabilitation project for the species. As of 2020, Dr. Kuchling and his colleagues have successfully raised 1,000 of the rare turtles in captivity, and will soon be ready to release them into the wild.

The Amazing Race

In June, Dave Palazzolo of Salt Lake City, UT, installed a smart security camera above his driveway and was surprised when he received an alert not long after installing the device. The high-tech homeowner discovered that a 4-year-old boy named Quinn came to ride his bike on Dave’s driveway each afternoon. One night, Dave decided to leave a message on his driveway letting the tiny trespasser know how he felt.

The next day, Quinn arrived at Dave’s house to find that the 50-year-old had drawn a chalk racetrack on his driveway for the young boy to ride his bike through. Quinn loved it, leading Dave to leave the racetrack intact ever since. Whenever rain washes away the track, Dave draws a new one, basing each one on a real racecourse to ensure that Quinn’s daily joyrides are authentic.
