🇮🇱 What’s Going On in Israel?

Israel’s president gave incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the first shot at forming a government yesterday following the country’s fourth general election in two years.

📜 Background: Israel’s ongoing political turmoil can be attributed to its legislature - called the Knesset - failing to form a ruling coalition after each general election. Learn more about how a coalition government works.

Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving leader, has received the endorsement of 52 lawmakers thus far – more than his closest rival, Yair Lapid (45), but less than the 61 needed to form a government and extend his 12-year tenure.

🛑 But Wait, There’s More…
Netanyahu is also embroiled in an ongoing corruption trial where he stands accused of fraud, breach of trust, and accepting bribes in several separate scandals. He is Israel’s first serving leader to face trial.

  • On Monday, Netanyahu appeared in a Jerusalem court to kick off the evidentiary phase of his trial. In a statement, he accused the prosecution of carrying out a “witch hunt” and attempting to oust him by means of a judicial coup.

After tapping Netanyahu to form a ruling coalition yesterday, Israel’s president said there were misgivings about him remaining in office while on trial, but noted there is nothing in the law preventing him from doing so.

⏭️ What’s Next?
Netanyahu now has up to 42 days to convince potential legislative partners to come together and form a government.

  • And the corruption trial: Legal analysts say it could take several years before concluding.
