🗣👂 Dose of Discussion

⚖️ Chauvin Trial Closing Arguments

Attorneys for the prosecution and defense presented closing arguments in the murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

  • Chauvin is charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd last May. He has pleaded not guilty on all counts.

📜 Background:

  • Second-Degree Unintentional Murder: There are two standards: 1) "Caus[ing] the death of a human being, without intent to effect the death of any person, while committing or attempting to commit a felony offense other than criminal sexual conduct in the first or second degree with force or violence or a drive-by shooting" or 2) "Caus[ing] the death of a human being without intent to effect the death of any person, while intentionally inflicting or attempting to inflict bodily harm upon the victim, when the perpetrator is restrained under an order for protection and the victim is a person designated to receive protection under the order."
  • Third-Degree Murder: An unplanned, unintentional killing (i.e., a person sells bad drugs). Some states use “third-degree murder” and “manslaughter” interchangeably (not Minnesota).
  • Second-Degree Manslaughter: Knowingly or willingly taking a risk that results in the death of a person (i.e., when two people are out hunting, one does something negligent and then unintentionally shoots the other); First degree occurs when someone is provoked in the heat of passion.

🗣️ The Arguments
Prosecutors centered their case around a bystander video of the incident, which showed Chauvin with his knee on Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds.

  • They called 38 witnesses and played dozens of video clips over the course of 11 days, arguing that Floyd died from asphyxia - or, lack of oxygen - due to Chauvin’s actions.

The defense claimed the prosecution did not consider the “totality of the circumstances” as required by law, and failed to meet the burden of proof for conviction (i.e, “clear and convincing evidence” “beyond a reasonable doubt”).

  • They called seven witnesses over the course of two days, arguing that Floyd died of a heart condition and the fentanyl and methamphetamine found in his system.

⏭️ What’s Next?
After closing arguments, the jurors were sequestered to begin deliberations (isolating them from any outside influence).

  • The jurors will continue deliberating until they reach a unanimous verdict, or become deadlocked and can’t (resulting in a mistrial).

Gif: NASA

NASA’s Ingenuity Mars helicopter became the first aircraft in history to successfully carry out a powered, controlled flight on another planet yesterday morning.

  • The Ingenuity team confirmed the helicopter’s entirely autonomous flight succeeded after receiving data via NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover.

More: Data showed the craft climbed to its prescribed maximum altitude of 10 feet and hovered for 30 seconds before descending back to the surface of Mars. (Video)

Fun Fact: Ingenuity is carrying a piece of fabric from the Wright brothers 1903 plane that made the first controlled flight on Earth.

🎧 Hear, Hear!

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a suite of new audio products yesterday.

  • Live Audio Rooms: A new feature where users can engage in real-time conversations with others (similar to the app Clubhouse). It will be available to everyone on the FB app and FB Messenger this summer.
  • Soundbites: An upcoming product where users can listen to short-form audio clips, such as jokes, in the form of a feed. FB will use an algorithm to determine which clips are played for each user.

Zuckerberg also said the company is working on new podcast features and enhanced Spotify integration.

More Live Audio: Clubhouse announced a Series C funding round on Saturday, though it didn’t disclose the amount of money raised. Reuters and Bloomberg both reported the round valued Clubhouse at ~$4B.

Joining the Club: Reddit unveiled Reddit Talk on Monday, a new feature that lets users host live audio conversations within their communities.

💡 Dose of Knowledge Answer

C) 6 years

The Constitution requires the Senate be divided into three classes for purposes of elections. Senators are elected to six-year terms, which are staggered so that roughly one-third of the chamber is up for reelection every two years.
