🗣👂 Dose of Discussion

🏛️ Congress Considers Capitol Commission

The House voted 252 - 175 yesterday evening to approve a bill that would create a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol in which five people died.

  • Since that day, federal charges have been brought against more than 490 people who participated in the riot.

*Correction: The bill would create a commission with ten members, not 20 as we reported yesterday.

🤿 A deeper dive…
Modeled after the investigation into the 9/11 attacks, the proposed independent commission would contain five Democrats, including the chair, and five Republicans, including the vice chair.

  • It would be charged with examining security and intelligence failures surrounding the riot, and face a December 31 deadline to release a public report making recommendations for securing the Capitol and preventing any future attack.

⏭️ What’s Next?
The measure now heads to the 50-50 Senate, where 60 votes are needed to overcome the filibuster.

  • Hours before yesterday’s House vote, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) revealed he will oppose the proposed legislation, with many other Senate Republicans expected to follow suit (though the exact number is unknown).

📣🗣💬 This Week’s Poll Responses

description of image

Background: Monday’s Dose of Discussion explored the business response to the CDC’s updated mask guidance for fully vaccinated individuals.

description of image

Everyone on the premises must wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status  "I think having everyone mask up eliminates the guessing game of who's vaccinated and who isn't as well as having to carry around the important vaccination card. I also don't have to guess how I'm supposed to act in the store -- if everyone is masked up, there's no question. Having the disparity in businesses is going to cause confusion and possibly animosity."

Fully vaccinated individuals do not have to wear masks (operating on the ‘honor system’) – "Since vaccinated people are protected from contracting and spreading the virus, there is no need to require them to wear masks. Requiring proof seems like a good idea, but would not be practical. Expecting everybody to carry around a small piece of paper and policing personal health information seems like a recipe for disaster. If a person chooses to remain unvaccinated and is worried about people not following the honor code, they have the option to remain at home."

Fully vaccinated individuals do not have to wear masks (proof of vaccination required) – "This would encourage more people to get the vaccine. If you don't require proof, then people won't operate on the honor system. If you do, people will feel ostracized if they're the only ones with a mask - it's like a negative label. And the power of social influence is incredible. It might be exactly what we need to convince the rest of the population to get the vaccine."

Unsure – "I don’t think it matters who wears a mask and who doesn’t."

Three years ago, Latonya Young was juggling life as a hairstylist, part-time Uber driver, and single mom of three. The then-41-year-old had dropped out of high school when she was 16 to care for her son, but still wanted to gain her formal education.

  • On one of her many rides, Latonya opened up to her passenger Kevin Esch about her goal to eventually complete college at Georgia State University, and the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that stood in her way.

Little did she know, that conversation would end up changing her life…

🦟 Florida’s De-Bugging Process

description of image

Image: Oxitec

America’s first open-air, genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes began to hatch and take flight in the Florida Keys earlier this month as part of a short-term pest control experiment.

  • The insects carry genetic add-ons that block development in females, rendering them unable to reproduce.
  • The test is designed to shrink the local population of Aedes aegypti, a mosquito species that spreads dengue and Zika virus.
