Good morning. Today’s newsletter starts with a big thank you to all who participated in the Dollars for DONUTs Weekend celebrating our birthday. It was a resounding success.
-
Quick note: We flubbed the logistics of announcing the cash prize winners – the contest closed at midnight last night and we still need to get our ducks in a row (notify and hear back from winners, get first names/location, etc.). We’ll be reaching out to the winners today and announcing them in the newsletter tomorrow.
But what we are announcing today is, thanks to your outpouring of support, a $453 donation to the Crisis Text Line, which provides free 24/7 support to individuals in crisis. We’ll be posting a pic of the donation on our Instagram later today.
⏰🚀 Ready, Set, Go: Today’s newsletter takes 3.29 minutes to read. (With the 360 view: 5.99 minutes.)

📵 Politicians & Social Media: What’s the Move?
|
On Friday, Facebook announced former President Trump will remain suspended from its platforms until at least January 2023 “following his praise for people engaged in violence at the Capitol on January 6.”
-
After two years, the social media giant “will look to experts to assess whether [Trump’s] risk to public safety has receded.”

The news of Trump’s suspension was announced alongside Facebook’s new policy on penalties for public figures.
-
From the AP: “Facebook also announced that it would end a contentious policy that automatically exempted politicians from rules banning hate speech and abuse, and that it would stiffen penalties for public figures during times of civil unrest and violence.”
🇺🇸 Elsewhere in the U.S.
Last month, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill that penalizes tech companies for deplatforming politicians, though the legislation is currently facing a lawsuit backed by Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Google, and other tech companies.

⚖️ Judge Overturns CA Assault Weapons Ban
A federal judge on Saturday overturned California’s 1989 ban on "assault weapons," ruling it violates the constitutional right to bear arms.
Relevant Quote
“It is a continuing failed experiment which does not achieve its objectives of preventing mass shootings or attacks on law enforcement officers. The evidence suggests it has made no difference at all. Where it has made a large difference is on the lives of numerous law-abiding citizens who would make, buy, and use these prohibited weapons for home defense and militia readiness, but for the threat of severe criminal punishments.” –Judge Roger T. Benitez, in his 94-page decision.

On Thursday, 128 baby bobtail squid and ~5,000 microscopic tardigrades, or water bears, hitched a ride to the International Space Station as part of a NASA experiment.
-
The squids, which have an immune system similar to that of humans, will be studied to investigate the effects of spaceflight on the interactions between microbes and animals.
-
Scientists aboard the ISS will study the water bears - often referred to as the most resilient life forms on Earth - to observe what tactics the micro-animals employ to respond to the demanding conditions of spaceflight.
