🏛️📝 Senate Report On Capitol Riot

A more than 100-page bipartisan report resulting from a Senate investigation into the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol found “a number of intelligence and security failures leading up to and on January 6 that allowed for the breach of the Capitol.”

  • The report didn’t assess former President Trump’s role leading up to and during the riot, which Senate committee aides said was outside the probe's scope.

From the AP: “The report recommends immediate changes to give the Capitol Police chief more authority, to provide better planning and equipment for law enforcement and to streamline intelligence gathering among federal agencies.”

❌🌐 The Fastly and the Furious

A massive internet outage occurred early Tuesday morning affecting dozens of popular websites including Amazon, Reddit, Spotify, Ebay, Twitch, Pinterest, and more.

  • The service interruption was attributed to an issue at content delivery network Fastly, which applied a fix to the problem shortly before 7 a.m. ET (roughly an hour after the issue first arose).
  • During the outage, the company’s CEO was reached by the WSJ and confirmed the problem wasn’t due to a cyberattack.

More: Other affected sites included several major U.S. and European news outlets such as CNN, the NYT, Le Monde, and The Verge (which tried to report via Google Docs during the outage… but failed to put it on “read-only,” allowing anyone to edit stories).

Even More: How do content delivery networks like Fastly work?

🗣👂 Dose of Discussion

🇺🇸🇨🇳 Senate Approves Industrial Bill Aimed at China

The Senate voted 68-32 last night to approve the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act – an industrial policy bill aimed at countering increasing competition from China.

🤿 A deeper dive…
The legislation is the final product of at least six Senate committees and several weeks of debate. Barring any further changes, the bill:

  • Authorizes $81B for the National Science Foundation from fiscal 2022 to fiscal 2026.
  • Provides $52.7B for “incentivizing domestic semiconductor fabrication” and $1.5B for “5G innovation.”
  • Directs the Department of Commerce to designate regional technology hubs across the country and authorize $10B over five years for these hubs.

The measure also addresses China’s political influence in universities, counters predatory economic practices such as IP theft, expands and strengthens U.S. alliances, imposes penalties on foreign perpetrators of cyberattacks, and bars U.S. diplomats from attending the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

  • The bill is projected to cost nearly $250B, with most of that occurring in the next five years.

⏭️ What’s Next?
The legislation now heads to the House, where it is projected to undergo another round of deliberations before landing on President Biden’s desk.

🚁 Let’s Talk IFOs (Identified Flying Objects)…

Late last year, ride-hailing company Uber sold Elevate, the company’s developmental air taxi unit it claimed would someday fly passengers the 74 miles from San Francisco to San Jose in just 15 minutes. But as Uber steps back from aerial transportation, another ambitious company has stepped in.

  • NYC-based startup Kelekona has announced plans for a flying drone bus that will seat up to 40 people (or 10,000 pounds of cargo). Uber Elevate’s previously-planned vehicles could only hold four passengers and a pilot.

The company claims that, when the first commercial flights of the airborne bus launch in 2024, it will take customers from Manhattan to the Hamptons in less than 30 minutes for roughly the same price as an Amtrak ticket (~$85).
