“A mature person is one who does not think only in absolutes, who is able to be objective even when deeply stirred emotionally, who has learned that there is both good and bad in all people and all things, and who walks humbly and deals charitably with the circumstances of life, knowing that in this world no one is all-knowing and therefore all of us need both love and charity.”
–Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962), American diplomat and activist who served as First Lady during her husband Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s four terms as president

📝 Increase in Adolescent Suicide Attempts

Image: Bloomberg
Emergency room visits for suspected suicide attempts by adolescents aged 12-17 rose significantly during the pandemic, driven largely by an increase in suspected attempts by females, according to new CDC data.
-
From the CDC: “Compared with the rate during the corresponding period in 2019, the rate of [emergency department] visits for suspected suicide attempts was 2.4 times as high during spring 2020, 1.7 times as high during summer 2020, and 2.1 times as high during winter 2021.”
More: The CDC emphasized that although the report found an increase in suicide attempts, it does not mean suicide deaths have increased, noting provisional mortality data found an overall decrease in the age-adjusted suicide rate from Q3 2019 to Q3 2020.
+Note: If you or someone you know may be considering suicide, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (en español: 1-888-628-9454; deaf and hard of hearing: dial 711, then 1-800-273-8255) or the Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741741.

🐋 A Whale of a Time
A 57-year-old commercial lobster diver named Michael Packard said he was diving off the coast of Massachusetts Friday morning when a humpback whale scooped him up into its mouth.
-
"I got down to about 45 feet of water, and all of a sudden I just felt this huge bump, and everything went dark,” Packard told WBZ-TV. "And I could sense that I was moving, and I was like, '"Oh, my God, did I just get bit by a shark?' Then I felt around, and I realized there was no teeth and I had felt, really, no great pain. And then I realized, 'Oh, my God, I'm in a whale's mouth. I'm in a whale's mouth, and he's trying to swallow me.'"
After what Packard estimated to be 30 seconds, he said the whale surfaced and spit him out.
Yes, but… Cape Cod lobsterman's whale of a tale sounds fishy, some experts say.

🏛️ Bipartisan Big Tech Legislation
A bipartisan group of House lawmakers introduced five bills on Friday representing the culmination of a 16-month inquiry into the power of Big Tech.
-
From Axios: “If passed, the bills could force Apple to change how it runs its app store, break apart Amazon's control of its marketplace and halt Facebook and Google from buying smaller rivals in an effort to remake the online ecosystem.”
The proposed legislation would need a simple majority in the Democratic-controlled House, but would likely need the support of 10+ Republican senators to overcome the chamber’s filibuster.

🌎 G7 Summit Recap
|

Image: Leon Neal/PA Media
The three-day annual summit of Group of Seven (G7) nations in Cornwall, England, concluded yesterday.
-
Participants included the leaders of the seven G7 member states - the U.S., UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan - as well as representatives from the European Union (including the President of the European Commission).
From the WSJ: “China has never been a member despite its huge economy and population; its relatively low per capita income means it isn’t regarded as being on the same level as the others. Russia was previously included in what was known as the G-8, but has been excluded since 2014, when it annexed Crimea.”
🤿 A deeper dive…
In a closing communiqué published Sunday, the G7 leaders laid out dozens of commitments for global action on a range of issues, including:
-
Health: The G7 committed to addressing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, expanding access to healthcare, and preparing for future pandemics.
-
Economic Recovery & Jobs: The bloc endorsed a framework for a global minimum corporate tax rate of at least 15% on a country-by-country basis.
-
Climate & Environment: Among other things, the bloc committed to “strengthening and accelerating” efforts to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and conserving or protecting “at least 30% of our own land” by 2030.
-
On China/Russia: The G7 called on Beijing “to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, especially in relation to Xinjiang and [Hong Kong].” The group also called on Russia “to stop its destabilising behaviour and malign activities, including its interference in other countries’ democratic systems.”
-
On the Origins of COVID: The bloc calls for "a timely, transparent, expert-led, and science-based WHO-convened Phase 2 COVID-19 Origins study including, as recommended by the experts’ report, in China.”

💪 When Push Comes to Shove…
|

Nate Carroll, a Wisconsin father of three, completed his 1,500,231st push-up at the 50-yard line of New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium earlier this month to break the world record for most push-ups in a calendar year.
-
The best part of his accomplishment? It was all to raise money for the families of fallen first responders.
Nate spent the last year campaigning for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation's Fallen First Responder Program, which pays off mortgages for families of law enforcement officers and firefighters who are killed in the line of duty and leave behind young children.

🌊🏊 On The ‘Plus’ Side

Rendering: Family New York
After more than 10 years of crowdfunding, testing, and campaigning, NYC officials last month greenlit a proposal for “+ Pool” – a 285,500-gallon public pool built on a floating island.
-
The pool’s layers of “filtration membranes” will make the water safe for swimming while simultaneously cleaning ~600,000 gallons of the surrounding river water every day.
-
Each of the pool’s four arms serves a different purpose: for children, sport, swimming laps, and lounging.
