the DONUT

Good morning. We fell down an internet rabbit hole a few weeks ago after a question was asked during a team meeting – “Why do the sun and the moon have a day all to themselves, but the other planets/moons/whatever Pluto is get left out?”

  • Tuesday comes from Tyr, the Norse god of war. Tyr was a son of Odin, or Woden, the supreme deity after whom Wednesday is named. Thursday=Thor’s day, the god of thunder. Friday is derived from Frigga, the wife of Odin, representing foresight and wisdom. The aptly-named Saturday comes from Saturn, the ancient Roman god of fun and feasting. As alluded to earlier, Sunday is the sun’s day and Monday is the moon’s day.

Who knew.

🛻 Lordstown Leadership Leaves

description of image

Image: Google

The CEO and CFO of EV startup Lordstown Motors resigned yesterday, the same day a new report from a company board committee found some disclosures made about preorders for its upcoming electric truck, the Endurance, were inaccurate.

  • The moves came less than a week after Lordstown revealed it doesn’t have enough cash to start full commercial production – planned for September – and has doubts about whether it can continue as a going concern through the end of the year.

More: The board committee report was in response to a March publication from short-seller firm Hindenburg accusing Lordstown of a litany of misdeeds including exaggerating its purported 100k+ preorders – though "The Special Committee’s investigation concluded that the Hindenburg Report is, in significant respects, false and misleading," per the report.

Even More: Lordstown's share price dropped 19% on the day.

An Illinois chemical plant that manufactures grease and oil caught fire yesterday morning, creating a blaze visible as far as 50 miles away.

  • Anyone within a one-mile radius of the Chemtool plant in Rockton, located near the Wisconsin border, was forced to evacuate due to the possibility of dangerous chemicals entering into the air from the ongoing fire, which officials said could continue for days.

We have confirmed all on site are safe and accounted for… We do not yet know what caused this incident, but we will be working with local authorities and with our own risk management team to determine what happened and identify any corrective actions.–Chemtool, in a statement published Monday.

⚖️ Ghosn With The Wind: Epilogue

After being extradited to Tokyo from the U.S., Americans Michael and Peter Taylor pleaded guilty on Monday to helping ex-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn escape from Japan in 2019 as he awaited trial for financial misconduct.

  • Prosecutors said Ghosn’s wife Carole allegedly enlisted the father-and-son defendants to plan and carry out the former executive’s escape by smuggling him to Lebanon in a wheeled box typically used for concert gear. Ghosn now resides in Beirut.

More: Carlos Ghosn was first arrested in November 2018 and charged with a series of financial crimes, including the concealment of millions of dollars in income. He has long said he fled Japan because he didn’t think he would receive a fair trial there due to the country’s so-called “hostage justice” system.

A car in Mumbai, India was swallowed by a hole that suddenly opened up underneath the vehicle – an event captured in a viral social media video (Disclaimer: Explicit language + no one was injured or killed due to the incident).

  • As it turns out, the spot where the car was parked happened to be positioned above an 80-year-old well covered by a reinforced concrete slab roughly four decades ago.

Mumbai’s local government blamed “very heavy rain” in the area for the concrete buckling, with officials later using a crane to extract the vehicle from the well.

The crane in action.

🗣👂 Dose of Discussion

🇮🇱 Israel’s New Government

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett was sworn in on Sunday as Israel’s first new leader since 2009, replacing incumbent PM Benjamin Netanyahu who assumed the role of opposition leader.

  • Bennett, Netanyahu’s former chief of staff, assumed power as part of a governing coalition deal narrowly ratified by a 60-59 vote in the Knesset, Israel’s parliamentary body.

🤿 A deeper dive…
Under the governing coalition deal, Bennett - the head of the right-wing New Right party - will serve as Israel’s prime minister through September 2023.

  • After that, former finance minister Yair Lapid - leader of the centrist Yesh Atid party - will rotate into the job until November 2025.

The new coalition government is made up of eight parties and includes, for the first time, a small Islamist party representing Israel’s Arab minority (called the United Arab List).

⏭️ What’s Next?
Israel’s new government is expected to hold off on major decisions surrounding controversial issues - like the future of the occupied West Bank - in favor of focusing on domestic economic and social issues, like passing a two-year budget and decriminalizing and regulating marijuana.

  • Earlier this month, Hayden rose from his wheelchair and walked ten yards across the stage to receive his high school diploma – much to the shock of his friends, classmates, and onlookers.

Image: Australia's Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation

While conducting research on batteries at the University of New South Wales, Australian scientists accidentally discovered a composite material they were working with an extraordinary ability to resist heat-based changes - a finding completely unrelated to the purpose of their work.

  • Typically, matter tends to increase in volume as temperature increases.

Researchers found their composite material - a combination of scandium, aluminum, tungsten, and oxygen - did not change in volume at all at temperatures ranging from -452ºF to 2059℉.

  • The material’s thermal stability could make it useful for aerospace engineering, as temperatures can change dramatically when spacecraft cross the boundary between space and Earth’s atmosphere.
