the DONUT

Happy Friday. A big thank you to everyone who wrote in with feedback and suggestions about The DONUT Headline — though most were focused on one specific thing.

  • "Umm okay. I thought a headline was supposed to be at the top…?"
  • "I like the idea but I think it would be better if it was at the top. You know, like a headline? 😉"
  • "This is super cool (really clear and easy to read & understand). One suggestion though. If it was at the top I think it’d be a little easier to read & skim."

Suffice it to say, you’ll find The DONUT Headline at the top of each section today.

Have a great weekend. 😎

👇📰 Quick Bits

🇬🇧🇷🇺 “London Has Lost Its Manners,” Says Russia

🎁 DONUT Headline: Russia tells the UK to stop sailing ships in the waters around Crimea, threatening to bomb the next one that enters (after firing warning shots this week). Britain doesn't seem too fazed, saying Russia lied about the warning shots. There's more drama in foreign policy than Frenemies.

Russia warned the UK yesterday that it would bomb British naval vessels in the Black Sea if there are further provocative actions by the UK’s navy off the coast of Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

  • The warning followed a disputed series of events after a British warship entered what Moscow says are its territorial waters, but which Britain and most of the world say belong to Ukraine.

Russia claims a patrol boat fired warning shots at the British destroyer, and its warplanes also dropped bombs in the path of the ship. Kremlin officials warned future bombs would be sent "not only in its path, but also on target."

  • Britain said Moscow was giving an inaccurate account of the incident, insisting no warning shots had been fired nor bombs dropped in the path of the destroyer.

🍪 More Time in the Oven

🎁 DONUT Headline: Google delays its plan to phase out third-party Chrome cookies until 2023 amidst pressure from publishers, advertisers, and regulators.

Google delayed plans to phase out third-party cookies in the Chrome browser until 2023, more than a year later than its initial time frame of early 2022.

  • The tech giant said the delay would give it more time to get publishers, advertisers, and regulators comfortable with the new technologies it's developing to enable targeted ads after cookies are phased out

Google is testing several new tools to replace various functions of third-party cookies as part of what it calls the ‘Privacy Sandbox.’

More: Earlier this week, the EU launched an investigation into Google’s plan to remove cookies as part of a probe into allegations Google abused its prominent role in ad-tech.

🏢 Surfside Building Collapse

🎁 DONUT Headline: A catastrophic building collapse in a Miami-area town killed at least one person – and nearly 100 more are unaccounted for. It's too early for investigators to determine what caused the collapse.

description of imageImage: Google Earth/AP

A portion of a condo tower in a Miami-area beach town collapsed yesterday. The incident killed at least one person and injured at least ten others, with nearly 100 people unaccounted for. (Warning: Graphic ContentVideo)

  • The city’s mayor said about 55 units were affected, and that the building was substantially full of occupants. The 40-year-old building houses more than 136 total units.
  • Architectural experts said a catastrophic failure like this is highly unusual. The building predates Florida’s most recent hurricane-building codes, but was built to withstand major storms and other threats.
  • A 2020 study from FIU found the building was sinking into the earth at a rate of 2 millimeters per year as early as the 1990s.

💬 Relevant Quote: "I think we’re going to one day find that there was something very strange going on at this building. Buildings just don’t fall down in America, they just don’t do it. – Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett

🗣👂 Dose of Discussion

🇺🇸 What Should America Do About Immigration?

🎁 DONUT Headline: VP Kamala Harris is headed to the U.S.- Mexico border today; she's been tasked with leading the Biden administration’s response to increased migration levels. What should her next move be?

Vice President Kamala Harris will make her first visit to the U.S.-Mexico border since taking office when she arrives in El Paso, TX, later today with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

📜 Background
Harris was tasked by President Biden earlier this year with leading the administration’s efforts to tackle the migration challenge at the Southern border.

  • Her first foreign trip earlier this month was to Mexico and Guatemala, where she met with both nations’ presidents to discuss potential solutions to address the root cause of migration from both countries. (CNN described the trip as “rocky.”)

📸 The Big Picture
The number of migrants encountered along the U.S.-Mexico border this fiscal year, which began in October, is already the most since 2006 — with four months still left to go.

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection apprehended 180,034 migrants - mostly single adults - in May, the largest monthly total since April 2000.
  • Of that number, 38% had been apprehended at least one time in the previous 12 months, more than twice the normal 15% recidivism rate from 2014-2019.

🛸🌄📲 Calling from the Future…

🔊 A Quieter Space…

description of image

Image: University of Sussex

According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, the noise from the buzzes and alarms of medical equipment in hospitals can reach as high as 88dB (the equivalent of listening to loud music through headphones).

  • The stress that results from this excessive noise can lead to delayed recovery times for patients and reduced performance by hospital staff.

Enter Metasonixx: a commercial spinoff of the Universities of Sussex and Bristol, the company developed Sonoblinds - powerful, transparent noise-canceling panels boasting the same noise-reduction effects as two inches of plywood, but weighing four to six times less.

  • The new material is set to be tested in UK hospitals, and may have future applications in home and office spaces.
