🏢 Surfside Building Collapse Update

Image: CNN

🎁 DONUT Headline: The search for survivors continues, but it’s having little success. A 2018 report finding evidence of structural damage to the building has surfaced, as has a second report recommending $9M+ in repairs (which had yet to begin).

The death toll from the collapse of a 12-story beachfront condo in Surfside, FL, rose to nine on Sunday as rescuers continued to dig through the rubble.

  • No one has been pulled out alive since hours after the collapse Thursday. Over 150 people remain unaccounted for. Authorities have noted the numbers will continue to shift as they determine how many people were actually in the building overnight.

Records released by local authorities late Friday included a structural survey report from 2018 finding “major structural damage” under the building.

  • A separate report from the same firm recommended $9M+ in structural repairs, which had not yet begun. The owners of the condo building’s 136 units faced a July 1 deadline to start making payments.

More: An NPR report published Sunday found a Surfside town inspector met with residents of the building one month after the 2018 structural survey report was filed, and told them the building was “in very good shape.”

Even More: Engineers say the cause of the implosion may take weeks to pinpoint, but the early consensus suggests a concrete slab or support column beneath a pool deck broke first, falling into the parking garage and triggering a crater-like collapse.

🛸 The UFO Report Is Here

🎁 DONUT Headline: The U.S. government’s big UAP report was released Friday – and it didn’t really tell us anything new.

The U.S. defense and intelligence communities have been unable to determine the nature of 143 out of the 144 documented instances of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) from government sources since 2004, according to an unclassified nine-page report released Friday.

The report offered five possible UAP explanations:

  1. Classified U.S. tech
  2. Tech developed by a foreign adversary
  3. Natural occurrences, such as tricks of light or water
  4. Air junk, including birds, balloons, or unmanned aerial vehicles
  5. “Other” – this category was assigned to objects that “may require additional scientific knowledge” to identify and characterize.

More: The one identifiable case of the 144 total sightings was attributed to a “large, deflating balloon.”

+Note: The report didn’t explicitly rule out aliens…

🩸 Promising Cancer Blood Test

🎁 DONUT Headline: The UK is launching a large-scale trial of a new blood test showing promising accuracy in detecting 50 types of cancer – often before any signs or symptoms appear. (But, like, for real this time.)

The UK’s National Health Service is launching a 165,000-person trial of a new blood test that can detect 50 types of cancer before the symptoms of the disease emerge, according to findings published in Annals of Oncology.

  • The test, developed by U.S.-based company Grail via machine learning, looks for chemical changes in fragments of genetic code called cell-free DNA (cfDNA) that leak from tumors into the bloodstream.

It correctly identified when cancer was present in 51.5% of all cases - often before any signs or symptoms appeared - and wrongly detected cancer in only 0.5% of cases.

🗣👂 Dose of Discussion

🦠 Has the COVID Origin Narrative Changed?

🎁 DONUT Headline: A year ago, 49% of Americans believed COVID-19 'definitely' or 'probably' leaked from a lab in China. Fast forward to today: that number is 58%. What's changed?

Right now, the U.S. intelligence community recognizes two likely theories regarding the origins of COVID-19:

  1. Zoonotic spillover – The virus may have been transmitted from animals to humans, either directly or through an intermediate host.
  2. Accidental release from a lab – The virus may have escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where three researchers were hospitalized in November 2019 “with symptoms consistent with both Covid-19 and common seasonal illness,” per U.S. intelligence.

📊 What do the polls say?

Public polling earlier this month found 58% of all Americans believed it was definitely or probably true that COVID-19 leaked from a laboratory in China. (YouGov | June 2, 2021)

📸 The Big Picture
In late March, the WHO and China published a joint report on the origins of COVID-19 concluding the virus likely spread to humans via animals, deeming it “extremely unlikely” the virus escaped from a laboratory.

  • In May, an international group of 18 scientists published a letter in Science criticizing the findings of the joint WHO-China report and calling for further, independent investigation into the matter.
  • Later that month, President Biden ordered the U.S. intelligence community to “redouble their efforts” to investigate the origins of COVID-19 and provide a report within 90 days.

When Covid first hit the U.S. in March 2020, Delta Airlines was forced to temporarily retire more than 70% of its fleet, moving the aircrafts into storage for what they believed was a two or three-week lockdown.

  • With America reopening and more people willing to travel again, the airline is returning to business as usual.

One pilot assigned to “wake-up” aircraft #3009 last month found a small note left on the dashboard of the plane from 15 months prior.

🛸🌄📲 Calling from the Future…

🚢 Now On Sail…

description of image

Image: Michelin

🎁 DONUT Headline: Michelin - the tire company, not the master of restaurant stars - is planning to put inflatable sails on diesel-powered ships to save money and decrease carbon emissions.

Cargo shipping companies are facing increasing pressure to address their production of toxic air pollution – the global maritime industry is responsible for nearly 3% of the world’s yearly greenhouse gas emissions.

Answering the call to reimagine more sustainable shipping vessels, French tire maker Michelin unveiled its Wing Sail Mobility (WISAMO) project earlier this month.

  • The project involves retrofitting existing ships with puffy, inflatable sails reaching up to 55 feet high that can inflate and deflate autonomously.
  • The sails are estimated to improve a ship’s fuel efficiency by up to 20%, reducing shipping companies’ operating costs by curbing the amount of fuel necessary to complete a voyage.

Michelin plans to test its WISAMO technology on a commercial freighter in 2022.

💡 Dose of Knowledge Answer

D) One month

Erno Rubik, a 29-year-old design professor, created the first Rubik’s cube in 1974 while fiddling around with a set of wooden blocks in an apartment he shared with his mother.

  • After initially twisting and turning the cube to create a kaleidoscope of color, Rubik wanted to put the blocks back to their original form.
  • There was only one problem: he didn't know how. It took one full month of twisting and re-twisting to solve his own puzzle.

Modern Rubik's cube experts have the inventor’s pace beat by quite a bit – 3.47 seconds is the current human world record, while 0.38 seconds is the record for robots.
