🚀 Who's the True Rocket Man?

description of image

🎁 DONUT Headline: Richard Branson and Virgin Galactic successfully flew to space yesterday, beating fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos and rival Blue Origin by nine days.

Billionaire Richard Branson reached the edge of space and safely returned to Earth on Sunday in a private flight of Virgin Galactic's VSS Unity spacecraft. (Watch: NBC News coverage.)

  • The nearly 71-year-old Branson and five Virgin Galactic crewmates flew 53.5 miles above the New Mexico desert - high enough to experience weightlessness and witness the curvature of the Earth - for three to four minutes before returning home to a runway landing.

Yes, but... While the FAA defines space as starting 50 miles above sea level, many in the international community consider the start of space to be the Kármán line, which is 62 miles (100 km) above sea level.

  • "None of our astronauts have an asterisk next to their name." –Space company Blue Origin in a recent #subtweet. Blue Origin plans to travel past the Kármán line,

👀 On the horizon... Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos is set to become the second person to travel to space in their own ship when a company rocket takes him and three others to space on July 20.

  • Zoom out: Space tourism could be a $3B market by 2030, according to a UBS estimate from last year.

🏫📝 Updated CDC School Guidance

description of image

Image: Hunter D'Antuono/AP

🎁 DONUT Headline: The CDC updated its public health guidance for schools on Friday.

Fully vaccinated students and teachers don't need to wear masks in school when classes return in the fall, according to updated CDC guidelines published Friday.

  • The agency also urged schools to stay open for in-person learning, even in places where social distancing isn't possible or where cases are rising – in which instance, it recommends those who are unvaccinated be tested weekly.

📸 The Big Picture: The CDC's guidance is only a recommendation, leaving it up to the individual states and local school districts on how best to handle the fall semester. (In other news, school board meetings are about to get more fun.)

  • Its new mask guidelines will likely have no impact on students under 12, who are currently ineligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine – though Pfizer hopes to apply for FDA approval for children ages 5 to 11 in September.
  • Important to Note: The CDC didn't advocate for schools to require COVID-19 vaccines for teachers or students.

🇭🇹 What in the World Happened in Haiti?*

description of image

Claude Joseph, the interim prime minister of Haiti, speaking in Port-au-Prince on Thursday; Image: Estailove St-Val/Reuters

🎁 DONUT Headline: The assassination of Haiti's President Moïse - whose political career was dogged by controversy - has thrown Haiti into political turmoil. What's going on and should the U.S. get involved?

The U.S. will not be sending military troops to Haiti - as requested by the country's interim leader - in the aftermath of the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, a senior Biden administration official told ABC News on Saturday.

  • The news comes one day after the White House agreed to send senior officials from the FBI and Department of Homeland Security to assist Haiti's investigation into Moïse's assasination.

📜 Background: Moïse was initially elected president of Haiti in 2015, but the contest was later annulled due to allegations of electoral fraud. He also won the follow-up election - which featured record-low voter participation - and took office in 2017.

  • In January 2020, Moïse began ruling Haiti by decree after the country failed to hold parliamentary elections due to political gridlock.
  • In February 2021, he refused to leave office at the end of his five-year term, claiming his presidency was supposed to last until 2022 due to the delay caused by the 2015 election. This caused thousands to protest.

What We Know About The Assassination (So Far)

A group of gunmen broke into President Moïse's home in the Pelerin neighborhood at 1 a.m. local time last Wednesday and shot him 12 times.

  • Moïse died on the scene, while his wife - who was shot an unknown number of times - survived and was airlifted to Florida, where she is in stable condition.

According to Haitian police, there are at least 28 suspects in total – 17 have been apprehended, three have been killed, and eight remain at large. Officials say 26 of the suspects are Colombian, and the other two are Haitian-American (both of whom are in custody).

👀 Looking ahead... In the hours after Moïse's killing, interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph - who was supposed to be replaced last week - took command of the police and army, declaring a "state of siege" for 15 days (though it is unclear ($) if he has the legal authority to do so).

  • Only 10 of Haiti’s 30 Senate seats are currently filled, but eight of the senators have called for a new government to replace Joseph.
  • Ariel Henry, who was appointed prime minister by President Moïse but had not yet taken office, also claims he should be running the country.
