👏 The Sweet Spotlight

🚵‍♂️ Mountain Biking Miracle

description of image

Images: Washington Post

🎁 A mountain biker was miraculously saved by an ER doctor who just happened to be out on the same trail. Talk about being in the right place at the right time…

💥 Crash landing... Todd Van Guilder was out for a mountain bike ride with his friend when he hit some rocks and flew off the trail – landing hard on his chest and neck.

  • Quickly sitting up to brush it off and get back on the trail, Todd began to see white spots in his vision. Before he knew it, all he could see was a bright white light.
  • “My buddy who had been riding in front of me came back and asked, ‘Are you OK?'” recalled Todd, “I could hear where my buddy was, but I couldn’t see him. I told him, ‘I think I have a bit of a problem.'”

The paramedics arrived soon after and made their way up the trail to the men. At this point, Todd was having trouble breathing. He needed oxygen, and fast.

🦸‍♂️ Our hero enters stage left... The oxygen tank was in the ambulance more than a quarter mile away. Just as one of the police officers went to run and fetch it, Todd’s guardian angel rode by.

  • Jesse Coenen is an ER doctor. He was biking by the scene and happened to stop to see how he could help. After watching too many ER dramas, it’s hard to imagine the situation without a “We need oxygen, STAT !”

Jesse quickly biked down to the ambulance to fetch the oxygen tank – but when he returned, Todd was unable to be intubated through the mouth and needed an emergency tracheotomy.

  • There was just one problem… Jesse had never performed a tracheotomy outside of training before.
  • But using a scalpel found in one of the paramedic’s bags, he was able to successfully perform the procedure and insert the air tube through his neck before Todd ran out of oxygen.

🍿🤗 We're walking out of the theater happy: Ten days later, Todd was released from the hospital with only the small scar on his neck and some road rash on his knee.

  • Todd still can’t believe the doctor just so happened to be biking by right at the precise moment he needed him. “I’m obviously extremely fortunate,” he shared. “What are the odds?”

“I stumbled onto the scene,” Doctor Jesse said of the accident. “It’s a lesson to us all that you never know who you’re going to encounter.”

📝🧠 Just for Fun: Brain Teaser Edition

description of image

Give your best shot at one of these brain teasers – they definitely stumped me ! Answers are at the bottom of this email.

1. What has a city but no buildings, a forest but no trees, and water but no fish ?

2. This one is a little more in-depth…

You’re on a game show. You’re presented with two doors, one on the left, and one on the right. Behind one is 2 million dollars, and behind the other is a donkey. All you need to do is choose the correct door and you win the prize.

  • There are also two men in front of the doors, and they know which door leads to the millions. One wears a black hat, and the other wears a white hat. The host explains that one of the men is a liar, and will always lie, and the other man will always tell the truth – but you do not know which is which.

You can ask one of the men just one question. What is the question, and which man do you ask to ensure you win the money ? (Or the donkey, if you’re so inclined.)

🏆 What’s Your Win ?

It's your time to shine.

Each week, we’re asking YOU, our amazing readers, to submit your everyday wins and accomplishments. Whether it be as big as a new job or an engagement, or as simple as trying out an amazing new recipe or solving my brain teasers, we want to hear what you're proud of.

🥁 Drumroll, please...

🌆 Jeanne W. from Philadelphia is digging her new work digs:

“I just celebrated 90 days at my new job.” she shared, “After struggling to find a full-time job during COVID, I finally landed at a company where I feel valued. My new team is truly collaborative, and my new boss is a dream. As an added bonus, I have an excellent view! I am so thankful to this fresh start and also to my husband, family and friends for being so supportive of me while I was going through the process.”

🎶 Sarah H. from Salem, Massachusetts is not throwing away her shot.

“My spouse scored tickets for us to see Hamilton on Broadway in NYC for my 40th birthday! Our family (but most of all, our 8 year old), got really into Hamilton during the pandemic when it was released on Disney+. Our son even dressed up as Hamilton last year. It was a truly special moment being in the theater and watching the show live - the energy was unreal! This has been our COVID bright spot - it really brought us together as a family, and experiencing NYC through our son's eyes was priceless.”

🍼 Lastly, a HUGE congratulations to Kaley B. from Nashville and her husband:

My husband and I have been trying to expand our family for 2.5 years. After more than 10 months of fertility treatments including IVF and a surgery, we just found out this past week that our transfer was successful and we are expecting our first child. We are still in shock but considering it our biggest “win” this year!

  • I received so many responses last week that it was so difficult to choose only three to feature.

If you submitted and weren’t in this week, keep an eye out in future newsletters – I’m hoping to share all of them in due time. Thank you for sharing your wins with me; it made my week reading them all. 🥰

If you haven’t guessed it by now, I want to hear your wins.

  • Use this Google form to share what you're proud of or grateful for recently. Two or three responses will be featured in next week's newsletter !

Share your wins.

📝🧠 Brain Teaser Answers...

  1. A map
  2. You ask either man the following question: “If I asked the other guy which door has the money, what would he say?” and then choose the opposite door. Work it out: If you ask the question to the liar, he will lie about the ‘correct’ answer, so you must choose the opposite door. If you ask the truth teller, he will tell the truth about the lie, so you can choose the opposite door as well.
