❌ Corrections

Note: We had a previous policy of issuing corrections in the section where we made the error – but in an effort to increase transparency, we'll be running any mistakes front-and-center from here-on-out.

  • For our first correction in this new section: In Friday’s edition, we mistakenly referred to a pair of vaccine mandates issued by the Biden administration as “laws,” which can only be enacted through Congress. Thanks to Arthur B. for being the first to bring this to our attention !

📱 Break Your iPhone 13 ? You Could See A Lot of This…

description of imageImage: Apple Toolbox

🎁 For the first time, the new iPhone 13 completely disables Face ID when a third party repairs your screen, according to a new report from iFixit.

🤔 Why it’s important: A good portion of the $4 billion phone repair industry comes from fixing broken iPhone screens.

Moving forward, Apple’s move gives the industry two choices: 1) join the company’s reportedly restrictive “authorized” repair network or 2) use a workaround that requires microsoldering, as well as other skilled work.

  • Microsoldering calls for thousands of dollars of equipment and quite a bit of practice. “Three out of 10 shops solder,” a repair tech told iFixit. “One out of [those] three can do BGA work.”
  • Those in Apple’s network only need to log the repair using the company’s proprietary software, which allows the tech to repair the screen without disabling any functionality.

In other words, for those who can access Apple’s network, replacing a screen on the iPhone 13 is the same. For independent shops – and ultimately consumers – everything is different.

😤 Zoom out: Making phones difficult and costly to repair isn’t anything new for Apple – or other phone manufacturers – so historically, third-party repairers have been a solid option.

  • Apple’s in-network repair charges for the iPhone 12 increased by up to 40% compared with the iPhone 11, and Samsung’s line of Galaxy phones are also rather tricky for third-party repairers to fix.

📸 The big picture... Support for right-to-repair, proposed legislation advocates say would put every repairer on the same foot and provide consumers with more options, has been gaining steam in Australia, Canada, the UK, and the U.S.

  • This past February, the EU voted to establish a ‘right to repair’ legislative framework, and last November, 75% of Massachusetts voters approved an automotive right-to-repair measure.

🎤 Tragedy at Astroworld

description of imageImage: Julian Bajsel/Billboard

🎁 A stampede of fans surging toward the stage during Travis Scott's Astroworld music festival in Houston killed at least eight people between 14-27 years old, officials said on Saturday.

At least twenty-five people were transported to the hospital on Friday. As of last night, 13 were still hospitalized including five minors.

What happened ?... There were ~50,000 people attending the sold-out festival at NRG Park, a venue that could’ve allowed more than 200,000 per fire code assembly occupancy. Around 9:30 pm on Friday, headliner Travis Scott took the stage and the crowd seemed to rush to the front…. forty minutes later, his performance ended and the festival was canceled.

  • Experts who study deaths caused by crowd surges say they’re often a result of density, meaning too many people packed into a small space. Folks are often running away from a perceived threat or toward something, such as a performer, before hitting a barrier.

Zoom out: Similar tragedies have occurred in the past. In 2010, 21 people died in a crush at an EDM festival in Germany; a decade earlier, nine people were killed at a Pearl Jam concert in Denmark; in 1979, 11 people died trying to get into a Cincinnati, Ohio, concert by The Who.

👁 Looking ahead... Officials are in the midst of an investigation, which is likely to focus on security and safety protocols.

  • Per Houston’s fire chief, there were barricade breaches and crowd control issues at Astroworld in 2019, the most recent year it was held. Because of that, this year's event had stronger fencing, more barricades, more space for crowd control, and more security personnel.
  • "Last night was tragic on many different levels, and this is a very, very active investigation," Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said. "And we'll probably be at it for quite some time to determine what exactly happened."

💉 Federal Vaccine Mandates Face Legal Challenges

description of imageImage: Dado Ruvic/Reuters

🎁 A federal appeals court on Saturday temporarily suspended the Biden administration’s new requirement that businesses with 100+ employees ensure their workers are vaccinated or tested weekly for COVID-19.

The conservative-leaning Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals granted the emergency stay while considering an official injunction, saying the measure – which applies to roughly ⅔ of American workers – raises “grave statutory and constitutional issues.”

  • The petition was filed this month by Texas AG Ken Paxton, who was joined by the AGs of Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Utah, in addition to several companies.

📜 Background: President Biden last week set a January 4 deadline for employers to comply with his administration’s vaccine-or-test mandate or face fines of up to nearly $14,000 per violation.

⚖️🇺🇸 Zoom out… Nineteen Republican-led states have also sued the Biden administration over a separate mandate requiring vaccines for employees of federal contractors, which is set to take effect December 8.

  • Roughly 4 million federal workers are to be vaccinated by November 22 under a separate executive order, which faces at least one lawsuit filed by a federal corrections officers union in Florida last week.

📝 Looking ahead: Expect a lot more court decisions regarding the Biden administration’s various vaccine mandates, with the Supreme Court likely to weigh in at some point.

The arrival of COVID pills could complicate (or clarify) matters further.

  • The UK became the first country to approve molnupiravir, Merck's oral COVID treatment, on Thursday. An FDA advisory committee meets later this month to consider it for approval.
  • Paxlovid, a COVID pill developed by Pfizer, reduced the risk of hospitalization or death for unvaccinated adults in at-risk populations by 89% during a large study, the company said Friday.

  • ☝️ The results are in: Twitter users voted for Elon Musk to sell 10% of his Tesla stock after the billionaire posted an online poll and said he would abide by its outcome. At the company's current value, his shares are worth ~$210 billion. (Note: Musk also is facing a ~$15 billion tax bill on stock options in the coming months, which may be influencing the move.)
  • 🚲📉 Shares of Peloton fell more than 35% on Friday after the company slashed ~$1 billion off its yearly revenue projections late Thursday.
  • 🇮🇶 Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi survived an assassination attempt after an explosive-laden drone struck his home in Baghdad yesterday.
  • 🇪🇹 All U.S. citizens in Ethiopia should “leave the country as soon as possible” and will be provided financial assistance if they wish to do so, per a security alert posted to the State Department website on Friday.
  • 🏛️ The House voted 223-203 in favor of a $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill featuring $550 billion in new spending over the next eight years; six Democrats voted against the measure and 13 Republicans voted in favor; it now heads to Biden’s desk to be signed into law “soon.” (From the Left | From the Right | See the 360º View)

💬 Rodgers responds… “I’m not an anti-vax, flat-earther. I have an allergy to an ingredient that's in the mRNA vaccines. I found a long-term immunization protocol to protect myself,” Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers told the Pat McAfee show after it was revealed that he's unvaccinated and had to miss Sunday’s loss to the Chiefs following a positive test early in the week. 🛸🌄📲 Calling from the Future…

🚢 The Great Ocean Cleanup

description of imageImages: The Ocean Cleanup

🎁 A half-mile long trash-trapping system named "Jenny" has finally returned to shore after being sent out in late July to collect ocean waste.

Over the course of nearly four months, Jenny made nine extractions totaling over 63,000 pounds of trash. The mountain of recovered waste arrived in British Columbia, Canada, this month, with much of it set to be recycled.

🤿 A deeper dive… This wasn’t a one-time deal, but rather a testing phase.

  • The nonprofit behind the project, The Ocean Cleanup, is hoping to deploy Jenny and enough of her friends to reduce the size of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch by 50% every five years. (It’s currently ~2x the size of Texas).

⛽ On the horizon ?… A new study from Harvard, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution suggests vessels that collect trash – like those mentioned in this article – could eventually be powered by the waste they collect.
