👏 The Sweet Spotlight

From Crisis to Clothing

Ten-year-old Lalia Susini was on her porch swing being pushed by her grandpa last year when disaster struck.

"It started as a cute, All-American moment..." shared her mother, Stacey Susini with CNN. "The next thing you know there's blood everywhere and I thought, ‘I'm going to lose my daughter.’"

  • In what can only be described as a freak accident, the bolt holding up the swing to the porch roof suddenly gave out, ricocheting the piece of metal into Laila’s skull and rendering her unconscious.

🙏 Crazy how fast it can all change: Laila had suffered a stroke when the projectile entered her brain, and while still alive, the medical team responding to the incident had to work quickly and intelligently to ensure her survival.

  • "She was unable to move one side of her body with an open wound. Time was critical." shared her surgeon Dr. Danielpour. "The life of this beautiful child was in our hands and there was no room for error."

After two blood transfusions and an emergency five hour surgery to remove the bolt from her skull, Laila miraculously survived.

But when she awoke, Laila discovered the entire left side of her body was paralyzed. Over the span of just a few hours, the young actress and model’s entire life had changed forever.

🏥 From the hospital… "I'm working my hardest to get back to [everything I used to do]," Lalia said. "Some would think this is so bad my life is ruined, but you have to be positive."

Prior to her accident, Laila always dreamed of a life on the screen – but now the middle schooler is determined to help others.

💃🕺 To the runway… Laila recently designed and released a fashionable, adaptive clothing line with LATE Clothing for sick and injured kids. Her sweatshirts feature openings for medical devices such as catheter tubes, PIC lines, or casts, and with every purchase a donation is made to The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

🤔 Mindfulness Moments: Those “Deep” Questions

description of image

It’s often said you can’t truly know and love others until you love yourself. If we want to be positive, influential people in the world (which all of us do, right? #positivedonutfam), it’s important to put on our journalist hats and ask ourselves the tough questions.

Take a few minutes to think over or journal your thoughts on these questions. Want to share your answer? Simply reply to this email to get the discussion started.

  1. If you could sit on a bench in the most beautiful piece of woods, who would you want sitting right next to you? Who would make a perfectly serene moment even better?
  2. What if you have more to celebrate than you realize? What would you celebrate today?
  3. What was your proudest moment, and how has it shaped you?
  4. In what ways are you the same as your childhood self? In what ways are you different?

I cannot wait to get back to performing and sharing music with people in the new year.

🏅 I want to hear your wins.

Each week, we’re asking all of you, our amazing readers, to submit your everyday wins and accomplishments. Let's support and celebrate each other.
