❌ Correction | | In an effort to introduce transparency into our reporting, we place corrections front and center to communicate exactly what – and where – we messed up.
Yesterday we mistakenly wrote that Brandon Sanderson raised $25 million in just three days, which was actually how long it took him to break the all-time Kickstarter record ($20.3 million). It took the fantasy author six days to reach $25 million.

⏲ Speed Round | | An Update on Russia & Ukraine |
| 🇺🇦 The third round of peace talks between Ukrainian and Russian officials concluded yesterday with no major breakthroughs.
- Both countries’ foreign ministers are set to meet in Turkey on Thursday to continue negotiations over a potential ceasefire and broader political solution.
- The Pentagon said Russia has now deployed “nearly 100%” of the ~190,000 troops that were gathered along Ukraine’s borders, and fired more than 625 missiles into the country over the past 12 days.
- The 40-mile-long Russian convoy headed towards Kyiv reportedly still hasn’t moved since early last week due to logistical issues, while a separate convoy advancing on Kharkiv is also stalled.
- The WHO confirmed there have been at least 14 attacks on Ukrainian health facilities since the start of Russia’s invasion, which is a violation of international law.
How the invasion is impacting…
🛢️ Oil & Gas: Global oil prices rose past $130 per barrel yesterday for the first time since 2008; Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Sunday that the US was discussing a ban on Russian imports. The price of oil has risen ~60% so far in 2022.
🪙 Crypto: Coinbase blocked more than 25,000 addresses it believes are related to sanctioned Russian groups or individuals.
📉 Markets: Stocks dipped sharply across the board (Dow: -2.4% | S&P: -3.0% | Nasdaq: -3.6%), sending the Dow into correction territory and the Nasdaq into a bear market – meaning down 10% and 20% from recent highs, respectively.
- The Moscow Stock Exchange, which has been frozen since Russia invaded Ukraine, will remain closed at least until tomorrow.

A Hacker’s Guide to the Galaxy |
| 📱 Samsung confirmed yesterday that hackers breached its internal company data and gained access to some of the source codes for Galaxy smartphones and other devices, though it didn’t mention any group by name.
- Ransomware group Lapsus$, which recently hacked multinational chip company Nvidia, claimed responsibility for the hack over the weekend.
- In the case of its Nvidia hack, Lapsus$ threatened to leak data online unless the company removed crypto mining limits from its chips (when computing power gets cut in half if it detects it's being used for mining).
- So far, it’s unclear whether any similar extortion threats have been made towards Samsung.
- The South Korean electronics giant said the hack didn’t include the personal information of any consumers or employees. It also doesn’t anticipate any impact to its business or customers.
🌎 The big picture: Global ransomware attacks increased 105% last year, per cybersecurity firm SonicWall, with incidents affecting the world’s largest meat supplier (JBS) and America’s largest fuel pipeline (Colonial Pipeline).

To Infinity and Bed Bath & Beyond | Images: Pymnts/Insider | 🛏🛀📈 Shares of Bed Bath and Beyond opened up 86% yesterday following news that GameStop chairman Ryan Cohen acquired a ~10% stake and is pushing for changes. The stock fell back down to earth over the next few hours, but still ended the day up 34%.
- Cohen, who co-founded online pet retailer Chewy, wrote a letter to BB&B’s board saying he believes the retailer is struggling to navigate supply chain woes and win back lost market share. He also criticized top executives for taking large compensation packages during periods of underperformance.
- The billionaire investor recommended Bed Bath explore selling itself to private equity and spinning off its BuyBuy Baby chain, which he said is undervalued by the market.
📊 Zoom out: Cohen’s activism with GameStop in 2020 – which led to him being named company chairman – helped fuel its Reddit rally that saw share prices soar 1,500% over two weeks.
On the flip side, Bed Bath held off a trio of activist investors who were seeking to replace all 12 board members in 2019 (they settled for four plus the CEO).

EVs Are Snowbirds at Heart | Image: AutoBlog | The cold, hard truth about electric vehicles in the winter: less range and longer charging times, according to recent reports.
🌡️ The deets… Lithium-ion batteries that power EVs (and cellphones and laptops) are very temperature sensitive. Cold temps slow down the chemical reactions in battery cells, which saps range and increases charging times.
EVs also don’t have heat-producing engines, which means they have to siphon battery power to warm the cabin.
- All of this translates to a range loss of around 20% in winter conditions, according to a report from the Norwegian Automobile Federation, which also concluded that cold weather causes EVs to charge slower.
- New research from AAA indicates that when the outside temp is 20° and the HVAC system is used to heat the inside of the vehicle, the average driving range is decreased by 41%.
🔋 The bottom line: “Batteries are like humans,” Anna Stefanopoulou, director of the University of Michigan’s Energy Institute, told Wired. They prefer the same sort of temps as people do; anything below 40° or above 115° Fahrenheit and you’re not going to get peak performance.
Longer term, scientists are working on solid state batteries that don’t have the same detrimental performance quirks, but those are still a few years away from commercialization.
+In the know: Buying an EV soon? Some do better than others in the cold, according to battery analysis firm Recurrent.
